If you've visited Phoenix or Scottsdale, Arizona, you already know that the area is flush with luxury hotels and resorts. Big names like Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt operate many of the resort properties, which, depending on your points or elite status in those chains, can help make the getaways more affordable or attainable.
Disneyland is getting a dramatic transformation converting its Paradise Pier Hotel into a Pixar-themed hotel ready to open for business at the end of January. Last month, Disney revealed plans to double the investment in its theme parks by &60 billion over the next 10 years including expansions at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom parks, including potential new lands devoted to “Indiana Jones,” “Encanto” and “Zootopia.”
Unlike the wide variety of lodging choices at Disney World, Disneyland only has three on-property hotels: the original Disneyland Hotel (including the new Villas at Disneyland Hotel), the higher-end Disney's Grand Californian and the hotel currently known as Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel. The latter of the three is not only Disney's most budget-friendly hotel, but it is also in the midst of a major Pixar-themed makeover, which is set to be completed this winter.
Marigold-strewn altars to deceased loved ones, revelers dressed as skeletons, and colorful parades make Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) a big spectacle in Mexico and U.S. border states. The somber-meets-celebratory holiday November 1 and 2 honors the dead with a fusion of Catholic and pre-Columbian traditions. It sees locals decorating family graves at cemeteries and travelers joining public celebrations from Mexico City to California.

While the United States of America is certainly on the younger side when compared to certain European and Asian nations, the country isn’t totally devoid of time-honored celebrations, with Halloween serving as a cultural staple at the very end of October. Also known as All Hallows’ Eve, this fall festival took hold across North America due to the influx of Irish and Scottish immigrants during the 1800s, and is celebrated today with pumpkin carving, colorful costumes, and plenty of sugary treats—and when it comes to planning the perfect party, no one does it quite like the East Coast. With the holiday season in full swing, these spirited cities are packed full of lively events and late-night parties for all to enjoy.
The London-born, downtown Manhattan-based designer and art director Anna Karlin has always embraced a bit of creative tension. “I always just think everything is possible and I figure it out,” she says, having entered the interiors world as a self-taught product designer 11 years ago. Today, Karlin releases a new furniture and lighting collection that is a study in contrasts rather than bound by an overarching theme. Among nine new lighting series, the Mulberry set, made from sinuous oak bentwood and delicate horn-shaped silk shades, is evocative of Art Nouveau, while the Field headboard, upholstered in an abstract floral-patterned crewel embroidery, is a nod to Arts and Crafts. Other designs include wrought-iron chairs, lanterns made from ecru-hued fiberglass and colored marble side tables. A totemic bar cabinet, inspired by massive 18th-century Swedish wood stoves called , is clad in ceramic tiles adorned with glyphlike shapes that are a recurring motif in her work. Each piece revisits Karlin’s previous designs while experimenting with scale and material. “I’m really beginning to solidify my language,” says Karlin, who developed the collection over the past three years. “My alphabet is there, I just get to keep making new words.”
