Traveling during the holidays is stressful enough and every little obstacle along the way can feel amplified. While many factors can play a part in flight interruptions and delays, a new study by Upgraded Points takes a look back at nearly a decade of historical data spanning 2014 to 2022 to find out which airports tend to have the best and worst track records for punctuality during the holiday season.
“Understanding which airports and airlines have historically experienced more delays can help you anticipate travel hiccups during this hectic period,” the site’s founder Alex Miller tells Condé Nast Traveler. He points out that delayed departures, in particular, are 33 percent higher during this period, with 25 percent of flights leaving late compared to the entire year when it averages 18 percent.
He also notes that there has been a rising rate of tardiness since the pandemic—2022 saw the most back-ups in the last decade, culminating in an overall 37 percent of holiday flights delayed.
Analyzing arrival and departure statistics from the busiest 100 airports in the country during the extended holiday travel period from December 14 to January 5, Upgraded Points found that El Paso International Airport had the most delayed departures in the nation. At this travel hub, an average of 32.8 percent of flights leave late during the holidays.
It was followed by four airports, all within a half percentage point of each other: San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín with 30.7 percent delays, Albuquerque with 30.6 percent, San Antonio with 30.3, and Houston’s William P. Hobby with 30.2 percent. Rounding out the top 10 were Oklahoma City, Oakland, Reno, Sacramento, and Boise—all with more delays than the national average of 25.4 percent.
Interestingly, when it comes to arrivals, the list of the most delayed airports is different, with Chicago Midway International Airport claiming the top spot with 30.7 percent of flights coming in late. It's followed by Dallas Love Field at 30.2 percent; Denver at 30 percent; Houston’s Hobby and Newark Liberty tied at 29.4 percent; and Bozeman at 29.3. Also trailing above the U.S. average of 23.2 percent delays are White Plains, Oakland, New York’s John F. Kennedy, Baltimore, Spokane, Dallas, and Des Moines.
The only crossovers on both lists were Houston’s Hobby, fifth on the departures side and fourth on the arrivals, as well as Oakland coming in seventh for departures at 29.8 percent and eighth for arrivals at 28.8 percent.
“While it’s clear that arrivals and departures are very different acts, airport size is likely a big contributor,” Miller says. He notes that larger airports, like Chicago Midway, Denver, and New York’s JFK, have to deal with more air traffic congestion since each has
