Cities and countries across Europe have introduced visitor taxes as they battle the return of mass tourism following the pandemic. The extra fees can mean increasing the cost of your holiday by hundreds of dollars.
Next year, Venice, Valencia and Iceland have all suggested that visitors will have to cough up to enter. Several destinations are also hiking up their fees, including Barcelona. However, the highest tourist tax for 2024 looks set to be in Amsterdam.
The Dutch city has been plagued by overwhelming visitor numbers and poorly behaved tourists—and residents of the canal city are suffering. Local authorities have now passed a range of measures that will support those who live in Amsterdam, and it will mean tourists will pay more to visit.
Amsterdam’s city council has passed its budget for 2024, and one of the most significant changes for travelers hoping to visit the city is the tourist tax.
The fee levied on overnight visitors is set to increase by a whopping 12.5%, which will make it the highest charge of its kind in the European Union. Tourists pay an average accommodation cost of €175 ($184) per person. Based on this price, the surcharge from the tourist tax will increase from €15.25 ($16) to €21.80 ($23) per person per night in 2024.
The tax on cruise ship passengers is also set to increase. Those arriving by cruise liner will now have to pay €11 ($12) instead of €8 ($8.40) in 2024.
Day trippers to the Dutch city don’t currently have to pay an entrance fee, but the local government is also considering introducing a tourist tax for this type of visitor in the future.
Hester van Buren, Amsterdam’s finance councilor, told local press that the current administration was discussing the introduction of a day tripper fee similar to that long-mooted in Venice, although without installing turnstiles.
The higher tourist tax in Amsterdam aims to improve the quality of life for residents, according to Van Buren. The increased revenue will fund various subsidies and schemes for those living in the city. Property taxes and parking rates will not see an increase in 2024, for example.
“Many Amsterdam residents are still struggling to keep their heads above water due to sharply increased prices. The costs for residents will not increase further in 2024,” van Buren confirmed.
“The tourist tax will increase: visitors will thus contribute to the city's major tasks. This allows us to tackle the consequences of overtourism and make extra efforts to keep the streets clean and solve acute problems in neighborhoods.”

Iceland has become a victim of its own popularity. As travelers continue to be drawn to the island nation’s dramatic—and Instagram-friendly—natural landscapes, the impact on its environment is growing. In an attempt to curb that mounting pressure, the country’s Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir announced late last month that a new tourist tax—with specifics still being discussed—will be implemented in 2024.“Tourism has really grown exponentially in Iceland in the last decade, and that obviously is not just creating effects on the climate,” she told Bloomberg. “It’s also because most of our guests who are coming to us are visiting unspoiled nature, and obviously it creates a pressure.”

The fascination with theNorthern Lights dates as far back as the beginning of civilization, with the dancing waves of coloured light depicted in French cave paintings as old as 30,000 BC. Typically, they’re only seen in the northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere, near the Arctic Circle, on dark, clear autumn and winter nights. The lights are dependent on unpredictable solar flares ejecting charged particles that collide with gases in the atmosphere, so any trip to see the Northern Lights runs the risk of missing out on the spectacle altogether.
