With travel restrictions nearly nonexistent and the number of travelers on the rise, it’s easy to understand why several airlines are announcing changes to their fleets. United Airlines is the latest major airline to announce some new changes that passengers can look forward to. Here are a couple of changes to note.
United Airlines Orders A Record Number Of Aircraft
In December 2022, United announced that they would purchase up to 200 new Boeing widebody airplanes. This is the largest order in the history of aircraft by a U.S. carrier. United will have 90+ new planes in 2023, with 140+ new planes expected in 2024. The goal is to have over 230 new aircraft by the end of 2024 and 700+ new aircraft by 2033.
United is also expanding its destinations and adding new routes, including routes to Asia and the first U.S. carrier to fly directly to Manila.
Larger Overhead Bins
One of the advantages of bigger and newer planes is the ability to provide more space for passengers. United is bringing larger overhead bins to passengers, with enough space for one carry-on per passenger. This will be provided on all planes.
Better Entertainment
Additionally, all seats will have seatback screens so the entertainment can start once you’ve boarded. In-seat power and wireless Bluetooth connections will also be available wherever you are seated.
More Premium Seating
By 2026, United is also expecting to offer more premium seating per flight than any of the other carriers in North America. Time will tell how this will affect pricing in other flight classes.
More United Clubs And More Amenities
If visiting a United Club is part of your travel itinerary, you may be pleased to know that more United Club locations are on the way, with one of the newest locations recently opening in Chicago. Four more new hubs are expected to open this year.
Braille Can Now Be Found In Cabin Interiors
United is also the first U.S. airline to add Braille to its aircraft interiors. The entire fleet is expected to be equipped with Braille by 2026. There are currently about a dozen planes with Braille markings.
Summary
While United Airlines continues to expand to new places and offer more flights, it’s nice that the aircraft is also getting revamped to provide a better experience for travelers. Delta Air Lines also recently enhanced their entertainment for passengers. There’s a good chance that more carriers will follow suit to keep up with their competition.
