Myrtle Beach is a popular vacation destination known for a number of longstanding attractions, from beaches, to family-friendly activities, to golfing. Now, it has a new offering based upon another longtime pastime – miniature golf.
Visit Myrtle Beach, the city’s tourism board, has unveiled the Myrtle Beach Mini Golf Trail, featuring more than 30 mini golf courses along the destination’s 60-mile Grand Strand.
“The idea for the Myrtle Beach Mini Golf Trail came from our love of mini golf,” said Karen Riordan, Visit Myrtle Beach’s president and CEO. “More than one million rounds of mini golf are played annually here, so it’s evident how cherished this nostalgic experience truly is.”
This South Carolina city is referred to as the “Mini Golf Capital of The World.” According to Riordan, Myrtle Beach welcomes a Mini Golf Masters tournament at Hawaiian Rumble in North Myrtle Beach, courtesy of the U.S. Pro Mini Golf Association, every October.
Myrtle Beach’s mini golf history dates back nearly a century. Much of it is thanks to mini golf course designer James “Poddy” Bryan leaving his mark on the area.
The Myrtle Beach native was dubbed by Sports Illustrated as the “Father of Modern Miniature Golf.” Bryan’s work is said to have significantly influenced the development of the region’s mini golf offerings.
Bryan made his mini golf debut in the 1960s when he introduced a jungle-themed course that set the stage for his well-accomplished career. Bryan is also the grandson of one of the first leaders of what is now known as Burroughs and Chapin. This company is behind many of the major visitor attractions in Myrtle Beach.
“Bryan’s visionary approach revolutionized the game, transforming it from mundane ‘carpet golf’ to multi-level, expansive adventures,” said Riordan. “His designs not only elevated the sport but also solidified Myrtle Beach as the ultimate destination for mini golf enthusiasts.”
Bryan designed approximately 20 courses in the Myrtle Beach area and more than 200 nationwide. His notable mini golf courses designs in Myrtle Beach include Tropical Village, Pelican Points and Rainbow Falls.
His final design in Myrtle Beach was Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf, which opened in 1998. It is still in operation.
“Though Bryan passed away in 2002, his legacy has continued to live on and still shapes the landscape of mini golf in our region,” said Riordan. “As newer courses emerge, our community’s dedication to providing exceptional mini golf experiences remains.”
Among others, Myrtle Beach’s Mini Golf Trail includes Ripley’s Crazy Golf, Captain Hook’s Adventure Golf and Broadway Grand Prix.
The trail will encompass a digital pass system allowing players to check in at each course using their mobile device. Players
