It’s nearly impossible to watch Mamma Mia without getting the itch to book a summer trip to Greece. Each time I rewatch it—which has been about a dozen times—I’m reminded why Greece is at the top of my travel bucket list. Most of the film took place on the picturesque island of Skopelos, Greece, where you’ll find incredible beaches, terra-cotta rooftops, and plenty of sun. If you’re lucky enough to have a trip to this beautiful Mediterranean country on your calendar, you’ll want to start thinking about your packing list.
I’ll never forget when I was in Istanbul. I was in the famous bazaar, where every single vendor there offered me delicious apple tea – to entice me to make a purchase – and where you could find mountains and mountains of boxes of Turkey’s famous candy. Turkish Delight or “Lokum” as it's known in Turkey, is a delicate flavored jelly candy that is ubiquitous in the country. In the ever-expanding wellness world, one of the latest trends is actually one of the oldest: soaking in, and sometimes drinking, therapeutic waters. In ancient Greece, physicians, including Hippocrates, prescribed mineral-rich baths to treat everything from skin diseases to insomnia. (According to one theory, the word “spa” is an acronym of the Latin phrase “sanus per aqua,” meaning “health by water.”) The practice has also been employed in Asia since at least the sixth century A.D., when nomadic Buddhists are said to have brought the concept of onsen (inns and bathhouses built around natural geothermal pools) to Japan from the Korean Peninsula. Now, with various forms of hydrotherapy, such as cold plunges and steam saunas, making a comeback, wellness entrepreneurs are debuting properties centered on bathing. Here, five places to take a dip.
A friend recently said that living in Southeast Asia was akin to winning one of Willy Wonka's golden tickets. And it's impossible to dismiss a long list of advantages that include the cuisine, cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, low cost of living, and generally friendly, laid-back hosts.
Last year, I finally fulfilled my dream of traveling full-time when I got a job aboard a cruise ship. I was loving every moment of my nomadic life. I was too busy enjoying myself to worry about a relationship.
