This past weekend’s Super Bowl LVIII was a star-studded event which attracted guests from around the world with as many as 1000 private jets arriving in Las Vegas. From Beyoncé to Lady Gaga to Justin Bieber, everyone wanted to see the Chiefs play the 49ers, and, of course, witness Usher’s mesmerizing halftime performance. People planning to attend huge sports and social events like the Super Bowl via private plane can face a unique, high net-worth problem — no inventory left unless you’ve booked far in advance. That’s where Wheels Up’s new partnership with Delta offers its members an alternative; flying commercial in first class with additional exclusive perks. Alternatively, members who fly commercial most of the time may charter a private plane for short and medium range flights to smaller airports or for a special occasion. The partnership offers flexibility and ensures that members won’t have to miss out on popular sports and social events with several options to choose from.
The union between the two airlines was finalized in September 2023 and marks a new chapter for both Delta and Wheels Up, catering to around 55,000 customers (45,000 premium commercial Delta customers and 10,000 Wheels Up members.) “Whether our customers are flying exclusively private or occasionally private, we're expanding our market,” says Wheels Up CEO George Mattson. “We’re bringing in more people into private aviation by aligning ourselves very closely with a premium commercial aviation partner like Delta.” Mattson was previously on the board of Delta and was appointed to his new role at Wheels Up four months ago.
Wheels up members who decide to fly Delta are offered a premium experience to rival the seamless process of flying private with their VIP Select Services. If you’re flying from one of nine major cities in the United States, you will be transported to the airport via car service where a Delta point person will pick you up to quickly escort you through security, while another will handle your checked luggage for you. Depending on how early you arrive at the airport you’ll get to spend time in the Delta lounge before getting a ride in a Porsche directly to your aircraft. The experience culminates with you heading up a separate set of outdoor stairs directly to the plane entrance to your first class seat. From check-in to security to boarding the plane, you’re unlikely to stand in any lines.
