Amtrak is helping travelers criss-cross the country for less by offering $50 off the purchase of a USA Rail Pass.
The pass, which allows travelers to take 10 different rides over the course of 30 days, is now on sale until Jan. 25, Amtrak shared withTravel + Leisure. As part of the sale, the pass costs $449.
“The USA Rail Pass is perfect for those craving adventure and provides a convenient way to travel from town-to-town or across the country,” Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Eliot Hamlisch said in a statement shared with T+L. “This sale gives riders the opportunity to save big while making it easier to discover a hidden gem, revisit favorite spots or head home to reconnect with loved ones.”
The pass must be used within 30 days, but travelers can wait up to 120 days after their purchase to activate it. There are also no blackout dates for the pass.
Travelers who book with the pass can reserve a coach seat. They will not be eligible to upgrade to business class or a private room.
The pass is valid on all trains except the Acela train, the Auto Train, Canadian stations on the Maple Leaf train, or on the Thruway Bus Series 7000-7999.
In addition to the USA Rail Pass, Amtrak offers two other similar multi-ride passes: a multi-ride option (which is ideal for commuters heading back and forth from the same destination), and a California Rail Pass, which costs $159 and allows travelers to hop on and off several California trains on any seven days over a 21-day period.
The USA Rail Pass sale comes as Amtrak has brought back its seasonal Winter Park Express train in time for ski season, bringing travelers between Denver and Colorado’s Winter Park Resort. It also comes on the heels of the company’s decision to change its fare structure, introducing two new fare options of “value” and “flex” and eliminating the previous options of “saver,” “value,” and “flexible” fares.

While winter days at home may mean cozying up by the fireplace or under the covers in your comfiest pair of sweats, winter vacations will likely make you more inclined to spend time outdoors, whether that means whipping down ski slopes, sitting under a heat lamp at après ski, or walking around a new town square. As such, you'll want to make sure your winter clothing and accessories are up to snuff.
