Visitors to Chile have another reason to make a stop in wine country, to visit the freshly renovated and ultra-luxurious new casitas at Clos Apalta - one of Chile’s most highly-awarded world-class wineries.Previously, this French-inspired winery’s collection of four casitas held the title of smallest Relais & Châteaux property in the world; now with the of debut seven new ones and fully reimagined interiors for the original ones they usher in a luxurious new take on luxury and nature.
The new casitas have been under wraps for three years and the resort has been closed to overnight guests for almost as long, this fall marks their big debut. It’s been worth the wait. The fresh new look has its foundations in landscape architecture, seamlessly integrating five star comforts into the surroundings. Think glass walls, stone and wood finishes and enviable hillside perches that overlook the valley. They are certainly the among the finest and most updated offerings in Chile’s Colchagua Valley right now. Each new casita is comprised of three individual spaces – a living area, grand bedroom and a sprawling spa-like bathroom. There is also a massive closet and changing area lined with mirrors behind the bedroom space. The overall ambiance feels a bit like a five-star treehouse; fully integrated with nature and the surroundings but still marvelously swanky. Nature here is about more than trees and birds – picture sweeping vineyard views and endless cerulean blue skies that lead to a horizon pierced by the majesty of the Andean Mountain range. Every time you walk into your casita breathtaking scenery is front and center.
In keeping with the setting, meals are also a lavish affair. Lunch and dinner are always three courses paired with wines. Executive Chef Leonel Diaz (who is a local) brings forth elegant dishes that weave in local ingredients and spices. Dishes might feature ingredients such as pinones, a native seed from the Chilean pine tree, or something fresh from the nearby Pacific such as grilled octopus with vanilla and avocado mousse. The winery also makes a silky pisco, which they will gladly show you and your companions how to incorporate into cocktails in their shiny new demonstration kitchen. Guests are also invited to escort Chef Diaz to the local market which is a colorful and impressive array of every kind of produce imaginable. You’ll return to the resort and work with the chef to prepare a special dish for lunch. Other activities can keep you busy all day – horseback riding, hiking, and tennis (courts open in 2024). Mountain bikes are on hand for quiet rides through the vines, or just head out for a wander and you’ll likely spy foxes, peregrine falcons and eagles.
