2023 was the safest year ever for commercial air travel, but after several high-profile aviation incidents in 2024, the general public is paying closer attention to airline safety.

Though her work on Saturday Night Live keeps her tethered to New York City, comedian Chloe Fineman can most often be found criss-crossing the country to film in Los Angeles or back to the Bay Area, where she grew up. Recently, for her campaign with Nütrl Vodka Seltzer, she got to see a new place: Mexico City. “First of all, my brain still can’t understand how it’s a three-hour flight from LA [and five hours from New York], so I could meet all my friends in the middle,” she says. “And it was the most beautiful city. We saw luchadores wrestling, and the food was unbelievable. Some of the best meals in my life were in Mexico City!”
It’s not the only place Fineman raves about. Ahead, the master impressionist—whose memorable impersonations include Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet, and Reese Witherspoon—chats about hiking in Hawaii, going solo in Paris, and following dogs in Japan.
On reforming her airport routine:
I've missed so many flights in my life that now that I'm in my thirties, I've finally given myself a healthy cushion. I give myself time so I'm pleasant in an airport, which I think is one of the noble things that we need to retain as a society and a culture. There's no worse feeling than the anxiety of crunched time when trying to get on your flight and the line through security is so long. There's an ease that I have inside that is so nice; that's a new thing. I will say though, I flew out of JFK recently and I was four hours early, and that was crazy.
Her go-to flying outfit:
Again, this is my evolution into my thirties—I do trench coats. I can be in sweatpants underneath, but there's something kind of fancy about a trench coat over it that makes me feel like a traveler. I make myself a character: Carmen Sandiego is really fun to travel as. I really embrace her.
How she spends flight time:
I do red eyes a lot for that LA-New York flight, so I do sleep. But in the last year I learned that listening to audiobooks counts as reading, and that blew my mind that, as somebody who is trying to read more. So I listen to Audible and I love it. I am late to the game on most books, but I loved Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. The Silent Patient, I listened to that on a whole plane right and it was really scary; being scared on a plane is kind of fun because you're in the dark. And then obviously Britney Spears’ [memoir] is on Audible, and that was a really riveting flight for me.
The destination she could go to a million times and not be sick of it:
Paris. Lame! I think once I'd really set roots in New York, I was like, Wait a second. This is the same flight [time] as to LA. Why am I not going to Paris more? It's so easy. I just love it. My French is so bad, and yet there I am, feeling fluent. It's so easy

I took a three-day trip to Europe in November 2023, spending two nights on sleeper trains. One was a 30-hour ride on one of the world's most luxurious locomotives — the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

JetBlue has had a rough few years. Its attempts at growth — whether through the Northeast Alliance with American Airlines or its merger with Spirit Airlines — have been struck down in court.
I learned how to maintain dignity and self-respect, even in the face of humiliation, from my grandmother. My mother’s mother was widowed suddenly at the same age I was when I started Accidental Icon. She sold everything she owned, including her home in Connecticut, and moved to Dallas to live with her two sisters, all three widowed during the same year. As young women, the sisters performed as a trio; one sister played the harp, one the piano, and my grandmother the cello. They traveled often, and that is what they did for the next twenty years—this time without their instruments and husbands. We saw my grandmother during this period maybe four times a year. She would call and tell us to meet her at the New York piers or the airport, when she and her sisters were embarking on a European adventure or a trip to Asia. My grandmother, in an exquisitely tailored bouclé suit, would envelop us in a cloud of expensive perfume. The jingle of the charm bracelets she wore on her slender wrist announced her arrival. She would bring gifts—pearls from Japan, or perfume from Paris—upon her return. For me there were geisha dolls, books of watercolor scenes of cherry blossoms on rice paper with transparent covers, carved perfume bottles, and netsukes made of wood.

2024 is going to be the year when global tourism rebounds to pre-pandemic levels, making popular tourist destinations overcrowded. There are sweet spots, however—times when you can still visit firm favorites like Rome and Paris with fewer crowds, cheaper airfares and still find some pleasant weather (also avoiding the extreme heat that local summers now bring).
This spring break, travelers may want to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and lots of patience. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently shared guidance that they predict a six percent increase in passenger screenings for this spring break season, versus the same time in 2023. If those estimates hold true, this would be one of the busiest spring break ever. “TSA screened a record number of passengers in 2023, and we expect that trend to continue this year,” the TSA’s Administrator David Pekoske said in a news release. For travelers navigating airports, the TSA says the busiest travel days will be between March 7 and March 25.

If you’re debating whether to spring for one of the best travel cameras before an upcoming trip, consider this: Yes, a smartphone is perfectly capable of serving the average traveler’s photography goals, but a dedicated camera is required for capturing high-quality memories. The wide angle lens of a smartphone camera can only take its images so far; in spite of technology’s advancements over the years, its zoom feature still degrades photo quality, making them too grainy—in our opinion—to be worth taking. When it comes to travel photography, many of us want to get close and fill the frame with exciting faraway shots like skylines and canyons. A good travel camera also allows the photographer to shoot exciting, fleeting scenes from their trips, like bicycles blurring through a charming street, low-light landscapes like a starry sky, or a city strip flashing with neon lights. Lastly, we’ll leave you with this: In an era when we’re glued to our phones every minute of the day, documenting a trip with a camera allows us to be present in the here and now, and actually connect with the place we’ve traveled so far to experience.
