While Vail is justly beloved for its skiing and snowboarding terrain, there’s much more to this Colorado mountain town than snow sports.

On the train from Zurich to Bad Ragaz, a charming mountain town in eastern Switzerland, you pass mirror-like lakes so still that it’s hard to tell the difference between the sky and the water. Jagged Alpine trees are seen twice, their reflection in the water creating a topsy-turvy landscape. Mountain peaks are upside down and the cobalt of autumnal skies merge into the ice-blue of the lake’s surface.
It doesn’t take long to get to the idyllic town – a mere hour’s worth of swooshing through a landscape of unfolding, sumptuous sights. Found in the foothills of the Alps, in the St Gallen Rhine Valley, Bad Ragaz may be overlooked by the majestic Pizol peak, but it is dominated by the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, a main employer for the area and one of the Europe’s leading health resorts.
The sprawling facility is in fact three-hotels-in-one: the Grand Hotel Quellenhof & Spa Suites; the Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz and the Palais Bad Ragaz – each with their own distinct style. At its heart is a huge spa and clinic, where guests can also check into state-of-the-art spa suites, as a fourth accommodation option.
Wherever you choose to lay your head, the first thing to do is to fling open your windows and soak up the fresh mountain air, as well as take in the pastoral views of undulating valleys, meadows and gentle slopes. It’s so pretty, in fact, that the area has been officially named Heidiland, in honour of Joanna Spyri’s novel, which was set here, putting the region ‘on the map’. In fact, nearby, in Bündner Herrschaft, you can visit the Heidi house, which is said to be the inspiration for the main character’s home, and follow Heidi trails which take you past some of the locations mentioned in the book.
Dating back many years before Heidi was imagined, however, Bad Ragaz was actually already famous due to its thermal springs in the nearby Tamina Gorge. These were stumbled upon in 1240, by huntsmen from Pfäfers Abbey, a Benedictine monastery perched in the mountains. Having discovered the naturally hot water gushing from the rocks at 36.5°C, the Benedictine monks realised it had certain health benefits and, soon, word spread, with pilgrims being lowered on ropes to be submerged in the water. By 1350, the ropes had been replaced by wooden bath houses, which rested on beams over the gorge, and by 1840, the water was being channelled by wooden pipes four kilometres to the first bathhouse, at the Abbot’s Building, Hof Ragaz.
These days, pilgrims of a different kind – albeit still in search of health benefits – visit the Tamina Therme baths, a lavish area found at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz (open to the public), to sit in a series of indoor and outdoor pools of varying temperatures. Dating back to 1869, Grand Resort Bad

Colombia is expected to achieve “significant growth” in its cruise sector during the 2023-2024 season, according to officials at ProColombia, the country’s tourism promotion agency.
In a country with a staggering amount of vertical angles, the Swiss are practically born on skis. Even the dinkiest hamlet has a ski lift in the Alps, so the question is not so much where you can ski but how. Whether your idea of ski heaven is a remote log chalet or a party-hard resort, virgin or veteran, black run or blue, Switzerland has a slope to suit when the flakes fall in winter.
Increasing the use of public transport and minimising car dependency are two significant ways to help Europe reach ambition climate and energy-saving targets. At the heart of achieving both is the continent's railways.
Nestled in the southeast corner of France near the Swiss border, the Savoy region has a cuisine that befits its alpine location. Visitors should expect hearty dishes, such as its famous tartiflette, a creamy baked gratin of potatoes, onions, lardons and reblochon cheese; and farcement, a sweet and savoury potato cake that contains both bacon rashers and fruit such a prunes or pears.

From a luxurious, multi-day adventure through Peru to a short hop across the border from Switzerland to Italy, these rail routes all have one thing in common — towering mountain views.
If you’ve got one European long-distance hike on your bucket list, it’s probably the Tour du Mont Blanc. It was on mine, too.
The Alps tend to tower to mind when you picture skiing in Europe, cutting across France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
The Austrian Alps are known for their visually dramatic walking trails. But equally alluring are the sumptuous spa-hotels where hikers can relax aching limbs in a maze of saunas and steam rooms, all scented with eucalyptus. And no spa is more labyrinthine than the radioactive caves I found myself (naked) in in Bad Gastein.
There’s been a rockslide somewhere in the Maurienne Valley, deep in the French Alps. By the time I’m due to set off on an intricately planned, early autumn European rail trip from London to Athens, nearly a week has passed since the incident. My intended path through France, Italy and then on to Greece via sea had relied on a connection from Lyon to Milan passing directly through this region. Now the route is out of action and it could be months before the railway tracks are dug out from the rubble. Initially, I’m irate. En route to the Eurostar terminal at London’s St Pancras at 6.30am, however, I encourage myself to think differently.
I've spent more than 100 hours on trains in the last two years, from 30-hour overnight rides to quick three-hour journeys.
