Endless miles of scenic highways that wind coast to coast and meander around breathtaking natural wonders and ever-changing landscapes make hitting the open road second nature in the US. When it comes to the Midwest there’s often a misconception that it’s all about flyover states and repetitive countryside. But away from the big cities, industrial centers, and sprawling farmland, you can stumble upon some of the most European cities in America.

For those of you who snoozed through high school history, the War of 1812 was America’s second struggle against British imperialism. Or if you’re north of the border, Canada’s war of independence against the United States.

The USA’s sheer scale and scope means it’s impossible to see everything the country has to offer in one go ­– and you shouldn’t try. From sprawling national parks to quirky small towns to some of the world’s most exciting cities, America has an overwhelming number of potential trips.

The Midwestern United States is often referred to as the “Heartland” of America. Missouri and Michigan – and its largest city, Detroit – are defined in large part by their waterways. Michigan makes up part of the Great Lakes region, while the Missouri River gave the eponymous state its name. All that means plenty of outdoor pursuits – from swimming to hiking and kayaking – which seem made for social distancing. In 2021, my husband, my sister and I signed up for a five-day Tremendous Tawas Lake Huron tour run by Pardson, the Ohio company that publishes Bird Watcher’s Digest magazine. We paid almost $4,800 in all. The tour was canceled because of Covid that year, but we were so eager to see the rare Kirtland’s warbler that we accepted a credit. Shortly before the rescheduled trip was to leave in May 2022, the company emailed to tell us it was going out of business, and someone would contact us about a refund. No one did, but through my own efforts I got in touch with Jack Harris, the receiver responsible for the dissolution of Pardson. He told me the only way to get my money back would be through my credit card. But American Express said I was too late. Can you help?

The Motor City is on the move with new flight routes.  Turkish Airlines has begun selling tickets for new service between Detroit, Michigan and Istanbul, Turkey. The flight will be the only nonstop service connecting the two cities, and offer passengers the option to connect in Istanbul to over 100 different countries and destinations. Turkish Airlines says they fly to more countries than any other airline.   The airline will operate the service to Istanbul from Detroit three days a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. 

Amid a surge of new passport applications, the United States Department of State is taking a summer road trip of sorts across America to help travelers complete their application process.  The “Special Passport Acceptance Fairs” will be held at public libraries, recreation centers, and local city administrative offices. A majority of the events are in California and New Jersey, but several others are taking place in Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Texas, and Wisconsin. New events are added weekly, and the full schedule is available in the U.S. Department of State’s website.
