Why Café Carmellini Will Be Your New Favorite Restaurant In New York

“He’s in here, in the kitchen every night and he’s smiling. He’s so happy to be doing this,” explains one of the managers of Café Carmellini. He is chef Andrew Carmellini, well known around New York the past 15 years for his respected but more casual restaurants Locanda Verde, Lafayette, The Dutch, Carne Mare and Bar Primi. This restaurant, which opened November 1st in the new Fifth Avenue Hotel, marks his return to fine dining with reinterpretations of French and Italian classics and as his most personal restaurant is the first one that bears his name. It’s been packed since opening night and looking around the Gilded Age style dining room with its oversized bronze and seeded glass chandeliers suspended from double height ceilings, plush blue banquettes and sculpted trees in the middle of the floor, the chef isn’t the only one smiling.

Marriott’s new all-inclusives, tattoos at Andaz and other hotel news you missed

November is a great month — and a hard month. It's a mix of cold air and elections, hearty meals with family, airport chaos and, if you're like me, lots of time spent scouring the internet for incredible travel deals in the days after Thanksgiving.

The Best New Cruise Ships and Itineraries for 2024

A diverse crop of new ships will set sail in 2024, including intimate yacht-style vessels to never-before-seen mega ships from luxury players like Silversea and Cunard. There will be plenty of bells and whistles expected of these brands, including restaurants from top chefs, but also a few features new to the industry (think glass domes on the hull). Some are sister ships to those already on the waters, but with enough points of difference to feel like something entirely new—including the soon-to-be-sailing largest ship in the world, from Royal Caribbean, of course.

Do Airline Seating Algorithms Favor Couples Over Solo Passengers?

I have traveled the world solo: I've hiked in Africa by myself; faced a humpback whale head-on in Australia as the only person in the water; and been lost for hours at a time in countries where I don’t speak the language. I'm used to dealing with the countless jabs aimed at solo travelers—a taxi driver needling about why I am not married with a wife waiting at home (I’m single and gay), or hotel reception wistfully informing me that only double rooms are available (as if I’m incapable of sleeping next to an empty bed without being deeply triggered). It takes a lot more to phase me at this point, yet few travel experiences have ever irked me so badly as when I was recently forced to change seats on a packed airplane in order to accommodate a couple.
