While I was born and bred here in New Zealand – or Aotearoa, the country's Māori-language name – I’ve spent enough years away to understand how it’s a destination that can feel comfortingly familiar and completely strange to visitors all at once.

In the distance, the verdant North Downs stretch out for miles, the chalk hills gently undulating until their ridges merge with the horizon. Closer, still, are fields of white lacey Cowslip and wild yellow Woodsorrel which dot the landscape with pops of colour. It’s hard to believe that we’re a short drive away from central London.
This is Beaverbrook, tucked away off a busy road in Surrey, a grand manor house oozing history out of every wall. The country house hotel may have a foot in the past, as the former home to Lord Beaverbrook, press baron and confidante to Sir Winston Churchill, but the unique property is also constantly evolving with bright new ventures, exciting enough to keep a modern-day guest returning for more.
One of the newest launches is a new partnership with The WildKitchen, set to kick-off on 19 October 2023. The bespoke culinary experience has been masterminded by British film-maker Guy Ritchie and is centered around a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen. With a retractable canvas and under-table heating, the idea is for diners to be able to celebrate outdoor eating all year round. It also brings fire back to the heart of cooking, with guests able to select both their chef and cuisine type – from Wojciech Popow’s Japanese Nomadic Menu to Adam Sharpe’s Surf & Turf concept.
While Beaverbrook is also known for its high end Japanese restaurant, found in the house’s elegant former dining room, and its whimsical interior design by Susie Atkinson, with bedrooms named after some of Lord Beaverbrook’s glamorous guests (HG Wells, Charlie Chaplin and Elizabeth Taylor are just three), the Coach House Spa is also a major draw here.
Reaching deeper than the average hotel offering, this is where guests will find another new launch – this time, focusing on a 360 degree approach to wellness. The charming new Meadow Hut, a modern take on a shepherd’s hut, is found set aside from the main spa in its own secluded spot. Designed to be an escape within nature, guests can retreat here in solitude to enjoy a new collection of holistic wellbeing journeys.
Step inside the wood-clad hut, and peace reigns. Hanging ferns, vintage furniture and a wood-burner give it a homely, cottage-like feel. It is the perfect spot for the new Vibrational Sound Bodywork Treatment led by healing practitioner and holistic massage specialist, Alessandro Mancini, who has over 20 years of experience working in some of the world’s best spas. Renowned for his bespoke massage and sound therapy healing, Mancini is one of Beaverbrook’s ‘Visiting Masters’ – a line-up of experts who take up residencies at the spa to offer wellness journeys within their specialism, be it Chinese Medicine, Druidry or Tai Chi.

According to the popular Noah Kahan song, Stick Season is named for a term that was used by some of the older folks in the town he grew up in to describe this really miserable time of year when it's just kind of gray and cold, and there's no snow yet and the beauty of the foliage is done.
