Dubbed Winter Storm Lorraine by The Weather Channel, a major storm is dumping snow along the East Coast of the United States, leaving cities like Boston, New York and Philadelphia covered in snow.
The snow is impacting flights along the popular travel corridor, with FlightAware.com reporting that more than 1,100 flights within, into or out of the United States have been canceled, and another 460 have been delayed, as of 9 a.m. ET on Tuesday.
More than 45 million people could be affected by a major winter storm in the Northeast, with New York and Boston potentially seeing the most snowfall in about two years.@weatherchannel’s @mikeseidel breaks down the forecast from a snowy Central Park. pic.twitter.com/MUtS0Ol1wk
The winter nor'easter is expected to bring powerful wind gusts and heavy snow to much of the region, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and New England, and power outage concerns are still high.
New York is bracing for a major storm that’s expected to arrive on Tuesday morning bringing as much as eight inches of snow and 40-mile-per-hour winds.
Being described as the biggest storm to be headed toward New York in two years, the snow is expected to arrive during the morning rush hour and may impact trains and flights operating in the region triggering delays or all-out cancellations, according to Fox 5.
Flights to and from LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport are all expected to be disrupted. NBC News has also reported that flights at airports in Philadelphia and Boston could also by delayed or cancelled amid the storm.
After starting as rain overnight, the storm will transition to snow in the morning, coming down at a rate of as much as two inches per hour, before tapering off in the late afternoon, according to Bryan Ramsey, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
“We are going to see some gusty winds and with a heavier snowfall that could cause some reduced visibility on the roadway.”
Snowfall of more than 7.3 inches in Central Park would be the most since January 2022, according to National Weather Service records. Locations north and west of New York City may get as much as a foot of snowfall. During the heaviest portions of the storm, visibility will be limited to under a half-mile.

Finding the lowest price for a flight can be challenging, but one airline has a somewhat hidden tool to help travelers snag the best deal. JetBlue has a section of their website with a fare calendar that displays flight prices in grid view between an origin and destination airport, helping travelers plan a vacation to get the lowest cost airfare. The tool, called "Best Fare Finder," is located under the «Book» tab on JetBlue’s homepage. The page allows passengers to select how many children and adults will be traveling, whether they would like to pay in cash or TrueBlue miles, and then choose the desired destination from any airport. For example, the price of a flight ticket from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Orlando International Airport (MCO) in April 2024 varies widely. If a traveler booked it for April 18, they would pay $259, but if they can wait six days later, the price drops to only $70. The Best Fare Finder provides all of the prices in the calendar view.

Spirit Airlines has announced plans to suspend operations at New Hampshire's Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) on May 8, according to Boston.com.The budget carrier said the decision is due to "ongoing operational constraints related to Pratt & Whitney GTF engine availability and seasonal demand for our MHT flights.""This decision reflects our continuing efforts to make necessary strategic shifts to enable Spirit to compete effectively in the current environment," Spirit added. "We apologize to our guests for any inconvenience, and those with reservations for May 8 or later will be offered a refund. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is a great partner, and we look forward to returning with seasonal service next winter."Spirit operates nonstop flights to Orlando and seasonal service to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from MHT. According to Reuters, the airline is the largest domestic operator of GTF-powered (geared turbofan) NEO aircraft and has been battling engine issues since last summer."MHT is grateful to Spirit Airlines for their service to the Manchester community for the last few years," the airport said in a statement. "We understand that difficult decisions have to be made in light of the Pratt and Whitney engine issue. It is important to note that this is a pause in service, not a withdrawal in service. MHT stands ready to warmly welcome Spirit back to the Manchester market when the time is right for them."
Living in a rural and sometimes frigid part of Vermont, I used to worry about winter weather when I left my home empty to travel. Just before the pandemic, I went on a ski trip to the Rockies, and while I was gone, a pipe froze and burst, spewing water for days, and the end result was the total destruction of my kitchen floor down to the sub flooring, requiring more than $60,000 in repairs, not to mention very long waits for contractors and legal hassle with my sub-par insurer. Thanks to supply chain issues, it took well over a year just for my new range to arrive, cooking on an induction burner with no oven.
