Frontier Airlines is poised for a busy summer ahead, introducing flights between Puerto Rico and two prominent airports in the New York City area — and one for the first time.
Beginning June 6, Frontier will inaugurate flying between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to a statement. The flight will be offered 2x daily, competing directly with Delta Air Lines and JetBlue.
Later on June 27, the low-cost carrier will resume operations out of Newark Liberty International Airport, flying to San Juan up to 11x weekly. This new route marks the first time Frontier has touched down in Newark in over two years, competing with fellow low-cost competitor Spirit, as well as United and JetBlue.
It’s possible that we’ll see the low-cost airline add more budget-friendly flights out of both operations in the near future. Marking its first-ever route out of the New York-JFK, Frontier will fly out of Terminal 7, a mixed-use facility mostly used by international carriers. Over at New York’s LaGuardia airport, Frontier operates routes to several domestic cities, including Atlanta, Denver, and Miami.
These new San Juan flights are on Frontier’s website, with an introductory rate of $59 one-way.
Frontier has focused on growing its San Juan operation recently. Just last year, the low-cost airline added service to Puerto Rico from small to mid-sized airports, such as Cleveland, Baltimore, and Detroit. With the addition of New York-JFK and Newark, Frontier plans to operate flights between 20 U.S. cities and San Juan by the summer.
Along with Tuesday’s announcement, Frontier announced several new routes that will begin this summer, including its first international route from Phoenix. Starting May 16, 2024, Frontier will begin a new route to Los Cabos, Mexico, offered twice weekly. And within California, Frontier will fly 4x weekly between Santa Ana and San Francisco starting July 11, 2024.
The news comes as Frontier Airlines has announced several new initiatives to draw in a new segment of travelers. Its new UpFront seating guarantees extra legroom and an empty middle seat. The low-cost carrier is even drawing in business travelers with an additional fare option that includes free carry-on bags, premium seats, and more.
