On first sight, The Bahamas is not the most natural home for boutique hotels. Often dubbed the ‘Las Vegas of the Caribbean’, most of the popular properties (on the main hub of New Providence, at least) are all-singing-and-dancing sprawling boltholes boasting multiple restaurants, water parks and casinos. Yes, look a little deeper and there are a scattering of smaller, charming boltholes to be found – such as The Cove on Eleuthera Island and The Abaco Club on Great Abaco – but, until a recent opening made its mark in the sand, small and intimate was not typically the way you stay in The Bahamian islands.
Having flung open its doors earlier this year, that recent opening is Goldwynn Resort & Residences, which is approaching hospitality in The Bahamas a little differently. Located on New Providence’s famous Cable Beach – along the same curve of sand, in fact, as the mega Baha Mar three-in-one resort – Goldwynn has just 81 one, two and three bedroom suites (as well as 79 residences), two restaurants, a lounge and gym and spa.
Inspired by the ‘golden era of travel’, the hotel is sleek and minimalist in feel (miles away from the casinos and towers of its neighbours). Its curved mid-century-style of architecture, with staggered balconies (each room has one) and wide open spaces is reminiscent of a cruise liner – a nod, perhaps, to the destination’s major cruise appeal.
Walk into the lobby and your eye is taken straight across the double-heighted space to the ocean outside, the turquoise horizon merging with the aquamarine of the hotel’s centrally-placed, almond-shaped infinity pool.
Light-filled and elegant, the low-rise resort’s design ethos is contemporary and pared-back with a grounding, neutral palette throughout. Ideal for families, each suite has a streamlined kitchen area and lounge – making for practical living and giving a New York loft kind of vibe (there are also smaller studio-style rooms, perfect for couples). Squidgy linen sofas are welcoming, and there are pops of colour from the burgandy-coloured velvet dining chairs and jewel-coloured cushions. In the bedrooms, walls have a contemporary ribbed effect, with tactile lighting fixtures fashioned like stones – in fact natural finishes, such as timber, stone and brass, are used as a core part of the hotel’s aesthetic. White marble bathrooms, meanwhile, are slick and stocked with fluffy towels and full-size toiletries.
While ‘neutral’ might read as ‘boring’ in any other place, Goldwynn’s backdrop is the ideal setting for its impressive – and eclectic – art collection. Art is everywhere at Goldwynn, and it is rooted in the destination, with a wide range work by Bahamian artists on display. Abstract digital collages by Shaquille Coleby, have been

Maison Villeroy is a very distinctive hotel in Paris: intimate, private, luxe without being showy about it. Starting November 13th, its parent company The Collection, which operates ultra luxury properties in London, St. Barths, St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Courchevel apart from Paris renting for weekly or monthly stays, is bringing that style to New York with the opening of Maison Hudson. This time, though, the property bordering the Hudson River in New York’s Far West Village is being fashioned for a minimum stay of 30 days only. Given the design, accoutrements, and services plus the vitality of the neighborhood surrounding it, anyone planning that length of stay in New York should definitely consider moving in.
