Train fans and frequent travelers between Las Vegas and Los Angeles will have a new high-speed option that gets them from Point A to Point B. The Biden Administration has announced several projects to give travelers another way to travel. Here’s where rail projects are taking place, with several to begin construction in 2024.
There are several routes that the Biden Administration has announced will get $8.2 billion in funding. There are ten major passenger rail projects across the country.
This project will replace an old bridge that will improve railroad safety and help the bridge withstand harsh weather conditions. The bridge will also help with erosion and scouring while directly connecting Alaska's three largest urban areas. This will take place in Willow, AK.
With construction dates scheduled from 2025-2029, this project will eventually connect Merced, CA, to Bakersfield, CA, getting folks there in less than 60 minutes. A Fresno station will also be added. This project improved connectivity while giving travelers an alternative travel option. The California Central Valley will be accessible to locations across northern and southern California.
This project upgrades Chicago Union Station in Illinois, one of the busiest hubs in the United States. This project will also help meet compliance regulations with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Platforms will be reconstructed, allowing growth in existing services and future expansion.
This project is located in Brunswick, ME, to the MA state line, with construction to begin next year. With the goal of improved service and safety, travelers and freight drivers can expect fewer delays and better reliability. This will also support future expansions of the Downeaster service.
With construction expected to begin in 2025, this project takes place in Malta, MT, and the
Amtrak Malta station. Safety and reliability improvements will be made while serving communities in rural areas and tribal communities that have been underserved.
Las Vegas, NV, to Rancho Cucamonga, CA, will be served with this project, slated to begin in 2024. A high-speed rail track will connect the cities, getting passengers to their destination in approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. This project will alleviate traffic on I-15, help the environment by reducing emissions, and allow travelers in the L.A. area to connect via the Metrolink commuter rail system.
Construction on this new project from Raleigh, NC, to Wake Forest, NC, will begin in 2024. This construction aims to bridge “Raleigh, NC, and Richmond, VA, along the CSX Transportation “S-Line” as part of the Southeast Corridor that will connect North Carolina with Virginia, Washington, D.C., and the Northeast Corridor.”

Germany is celebrating the 250th birthday of one of its best-loved painters, the Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). His work features mountains, ruins and stormy seas, often with human figures, such as Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog. There are exhibitions in Hamburg (until 1 April), Berlin (19 April to 4 August) and Dresden (24 August to 5 January 2025), where Friedrich lived for 40 years; he is buried in the city’s Trinitatis Cemetery. His birthplace, Greifswald, has a festival (31 August-1 September) and three exhibitions at the Pomeranian State Museum (from 28 April). Visitors can also follow in the artist’s footsteps – literally, as he preferred to travel on foot, sketchbook in hand – to locations in his paintings, such as Rügen Island or the Saxon Switzerland national park.germany.travel

Although it has been years since I’ve traveled in mesmerizing Tokyo, my memories are as vivid as though they had been sparked yesterday—pleasures aswirl in unique flavors and noises, creativity and ingenuity. So when luxury publisher Assouline released the new book Tokyo Chic, I dove into its 312 lush-paper-stock pages, with more than 200 photographs and illustrations, which are bound in an outsize (10-by-13-inches, 6.4-pound) format—a hefty hardcover wrapped in silk. The brainchild of Andrea Fazzari, whose deft imagery and words are love letters to the inimitable capital, Tokyo Chic showcases a massively enthralling—yet strikingly intimate—city. Currently based in Tokyo, Fazzari is a James Beard Award-winning photographer, author and restaurant maven with notable backgrounds in fashion and film. Born in New York City, she has lived in France, Hong Kong, Italy, Spain and Thailand—and speaks four languages. What a sophisticated guide to have at your armchair traveler’s fingertips! Indeed, this coffee table tome would make a treasured holiday gift for those who have already vacationed in Japan or simply dream of doing so.
