Floridians and those visiting the state now have a competitive alternative to road and air travel.
Brightline, a high-speed train that runs between Orlando and Miami — with four stops in between and more in the works — offers a clean, cool, and comfortable way to travel within the Sunshine State.
The rail line began operating in 2018 with stops in South Florida, then expanded to Orlando in late 2023.
The Orlando to Miami journey from end to end takes about three hours and thirty minutes. According to Google Maps, driving the same route would take about four hours (or more if there's traffic).
On a sunny Saturday in March, I took a Brightline train from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach. When I bought tickets, prices ranged from $10 to $44 for the 36-minute ride.
I decided to splurge on a premium ticket for $44 — $20 more than a regular ticket — and I'm glad I did.
The included snacks and drinks, extra space, and access to a special lounge before boarding made the trip feel like a first-class experience.
Here's what my Brightline trip was like from end to end.

The 2024 Miami Grand Prix marked the third year on the Formula One calendar, and it was an absolute banger of a race. McLaren driver Lando Norris scored his maiden F1 victory in spectacular fashion under the South Florida sunshine. Benefiting from a safety car caused by a crash between Nico Hulkenberg and Logan Sargeant, Norris was able to pit for fresh tires while still maintaining the race lead. From there, he held off Max Verstappen, who’d already pitted and had minor floor damage, to become the third driver to win a race in the first seven races of the 2024 season.
Many airlines allow dogs onboard, with a lot of restrictions, while other airlines take large dogs as cargo.
It’s an unfortunate truth that air travel has become an overall frustrating experience. With shrinking seats, crowded flights, and rising fees for services like checking a bag, it’s enough to make even the most savvy of travelers exasperated. But a select number of airlines continue to stand out from the rest, with refreshingly smooth operations and passenger-friendly cabins.
Universal Studios Hollywood has decades of history as a working movie studio and is home to more than a dozen rides and attractions that make you the star of your favorite film franchises. But there is one thing it doesn't have yet — a high-speed, outdoor roller coaster.
Flying on Japan Airlines has always been, well, delightfully Japanese. Think of it as an introduction—or if departing from Tokyo, a bid farewell—to the country’s characteristic tenets of respectful, nearly differential service; seafood-forward and fresh cuisine; and commitment to cultural traditions. (Onboard oshiburi, anyone?) Add in comfortable seats across all cabins—yes, even decent economy ones with 34 inches of recline—and you have an experience worth writing home about. Or at least not complaining to someone about.
Asia is home to some of the fastest trains in the world — but train travel is all about the journey for me.

When my surgeon told me that after my ACL reconstruction surgery, I was going to have to delay my trip to Florida, I panicked. I had planned the whole trip so my twin daughters and I could fly together to spend some time in the sun with the grandparents.
