When I arrived at Thatch Caye, a resort off the coast of Dangriga, Belize, I was told not to worry about my luggage. Instead, it'd be carted off to my overwater bungalow without me lifting a finger.
When I craved a glass of water before bed, I didn't need to ask whether the sink water was potable — a tank of drinking water was already waiting for me.
During my two nights at the island resort, it was moments when the small things were taken care of that created a luxury vacation and left a lasting impression.
I've been fortunate enough to stay at The Little Nell, a five-star hotel in the ritzy ski town of Aspen, Colorado. On the other side of the world, I've splurged for a night at The Darling, a celebrity-loved hotel in Sydney.
I've slept in a handful of luxury spaces, and it's taught me that a high-end experience means that the details are taken care of.
For the most part, that was the experience at Thatch Caye.
A boat ride ended with a glass of fresh watermelon juice and a chilled eucalyptus-scented towel. I didn't worry about the cost of taking a paddleboard out for the afternoon since complimentary kayaks and paddleboards were included in the stay. Clean beach towels and cold drinks were always a short walk away.

Most importantly, a welcoming staff was the small detail that elevated the trip. During my stay, if there was a question I had, someone had an answer. If I had a request, that request was always answered with a smile. I felt welcomed on the island, which made the trip that much better.
And with Thatch Caye being about $950 a night for its top accommodation style, those details were partly what we paid for. BI did receive a media rate for the two-night stay.
While these details worked for me, some aspects of Thatch Caye might not be the best fit for every traveler.
Each meal was served at a communal table during a specific time. Dinner, for instance, was at exactly 7 p.m. For some travelers, 7 p.m. might be too early. For others, too late.
Each evening, the buffet had two entrée options, and if you're someone who's a picky eater, two options might not be enough variety.
The resort also focused on nature. While there was an on-site spa, most of the guests I spoke with were eager for their snorkeling excursion or afternoon kayaking. The resort catered to the ocean that surrounded it.
The other hidden details throughout the trip help Thatch Caye focus on sustainability.
For example, that communal-style dinner helps the resort lower its food waste. Many all-inclusive resorts offer buffets open all day, and buffets are known to throw out nearly as much food as they serve, according to Forbes.
