Sometime in the late 18th century, a sign appeared outside a shambly butcher’s hut in the English town of Stratford-upon-Avon: “The Immortal Shakspeare was born in this house,” it announced, using a then common spelling of his name. Devotees began making pilgrimages — dropping to their knees, weeping, singing odes: “Untouched and sacred be thy shrine, Avonian Willy, bard Divine!”

Nestled in the homeland of William Shakespeare, Billesley Manor Hotel and Spa is a 16th-century quintessentially British country house hotel just five miles north of Stratford upon Avon.

“When I was at home I was in a better place,” Mr. Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It. I wonder which home of his inspired that line, if any. It’s possible he had given thought to the home of his birth, where also lived in his youth. Amazingly, all these hundreds of years later, that home still exists and, not surprisingly, it’s a museum.

It was the shower for me. A shower convinced me that more luxury fashion brands should explore expansions into hotels and resorts. This particular shower was in my suite at the Bulgari Hotel Paris, one of the legendary Italian brand’s newer properties opened in December of 2021. For some reason, a lot of luxury resorts and hotels like to tout “rainfall” showers as a feature of their rooms, but for the most part, and in the hundreds of properties I’ve visited, such “rainfall” showers usually feel like a downpour let down. But not at the Bulgari Hotel Paris: this shower was transformative, the droplets so fine yet plentiful and luxuriously soft that I knew I had never felt real rain in actual nature like THIS.
