What makes a good city is subjective, but a good indication that a place might be worth visiting is when it's voted for by thousands of people. Time Out and Condé Nast Traveler recently asked their readers about the coolest neighborhoods and best cities in the world right now, respectively.
Many of the places garnering the most votes also mirrored more formal results, dating from June, released by the The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in its annual report of the most livable cities in the world in 2023. This survey encompasses serious issues for residents such as health care, education, stability, infrastructure and environment, and unsurprisingly, there is a lot of crossover between these results and the allure travelers have discovered in the bars, restaurants, parks and commerce of many neighborhoods around the world. What's more, many of these locales’ home countries also rank highly in the 2023 Global Peace Index.
So, if you're looking for some inspiration, different weather or a certain splash of culture, you could do worse than heading to some of these currently much-loved parts of the world—places that ranked highly across all of these studies and surveys.
Half of the best smaller cities were in Europe: Dubrovnik in Croatia, Porto in Portugal and Bruges in Belgium. Reykjavik came in ninth, matching Iceland’s consistently high score as one of the safest countries in the world—the 17th Global Peace Index in 2023 once again ranked it at the top. Coastal San Sebastián in Basque, Spain was a regular attraction for Queen Maria Cristina in the late 1800s, and is clearly still loved.
As for the larger cities topping the CN Traveler survey, many also boast neighborhoods deemed to be incredibly vibrant right now by Time Out. The old docks of Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland have been up-and-coming for a while, but its refurbished warehouse district and biscuit factories are still ranking strong (16th place), and Leith is connected to the center of the Scottish capital by a riverside walk full of pubs and bars.
Australia also ranked highly in both surveys, with the neighborhoods of Brunswick East in Melbourne and Enmore in Sydney receiving love for their multicultural vibe and amazing eateries that reflect it. Melbourne and Sydney took third and fourth place, respectively, among the most livable cities in the world in 2023, and ninth and fifth place in CN Traveler’s ranking.
Copenhagen in Denmark is also having a good 2023 in global sentiment and research. It was second place among the most livable cities in 2023, ranking consistently highly for the friendliness and happiness of its residents. Denmark was ranked the second safest country in the world in the same year, and the port area of Havnen came in

On my first day in Iceland, I paid 2,690 ISK, or about $20, for a piece of avocado toast at the Blue Lagoon.
Before we met him, we expected that Matthew Goode would have a certain refined British humor, and it turns out we were right. His success with hit series like Downtown Abbey and The Crown, blockbusters like The King’s Man and Leap Year, and cult films like Match Point and Stoker has not affected the actor’s open and affable attitude. Now he adds another credit to his list as he stars alongside Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button in Hackett's new autumn-winter 2023 campaign.
When I started planning my trip to Luxembourg earlier this year, I had one thing in mind: affordable luxury.
The strong earthquake swarm that started this week near Grindavik on Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula is caused by magma forming a dike - a vertical fissure-shaped intrusion at shallow depth, which allows the magma to rise and get closer to an eruption. This now threatens one of Iceland's most important tourism regions and is home to the iconic Blue Lagoon Resort. Civil Protection just declared a Level Orange emergency, and residents of Grindavík were told to evacuate.
Increasing the use of public transport and minimising car dependency are two significant ways to help Europe reach ambition climate and energy-saving targets. At the heart of achieving both is the continent's railways.

Sometimes, in a few particularly special corners of the world, you can drive just a little more than one hour from a world capital and find yourself in utter silence, in deep communion with nature. Sometimes you even kind of forget that cities exist. You just ease into the rhythm of doing nothing more than appreciating the beauty of your surroundings. Pa.te.os, in the increasingly fashionable Portuguese enclave of Melides, is one of those places.
