There's nothing quite like an Italian summer: sailing through crystal blue waters, sipping on chilled limoncello, and driving down winding oceanfront roads (in a red convertible, wearing giant sunnies and a silk headscarf, of course).
The Amalfi coast has long embodied this languid charm of the dolce vita lifestyle. And this summer, getting there will get a whole lot easier, thanks to a new commercial airport opening in July.
The Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is located 20 minutes south of Salerno, making it the perfect getaway for Amalfi and other towns along the southern coast (for towns along the northern end of the Amalfi coast like Sorrento, the Naples airport is a shorter distance away). Originally built as a military airport in 1926, it is now being transformed into a high-tech commercial transportation hub designed to minimize carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency.
A brand-new passenger terminal is scheduled to be completed in 2026. In the meantime, the airport will open mid-July to limited flight service. Here are all the new non-stop airline routes flying into the Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport this summer (some at ridiculously low fares).
British budget carrier EasyJet will launch new routes to Salerno in July. The inaugural flights will take off July 11 from Milan Malpensa; July 12 from Berlin, Geneva and Basel, Switzerland; and on July 13, from London Gatwick.
The London Gatwick route will be offered twice-weekly departing on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with fares starting from $45, according to EasyJet’s flight schedule. The Milan Malpensa route will operate three times a week, with flights departing on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday. We found flight from Milan to Salerno in August, September, and October for as low as $24.
Volotea, a Spanish budget airline, will offer direct flights from Nantes, France beginning on July 11 and from Cagliari, Sardinia, on July 13. On September 2, Volotea will add flights from Catania (in Sicily) and Verona (in northern Italy’s Veneto region). Fares for this summer start around $30, according to the carrier’s website.
Later in the month, Maltese airline Universal Air will launch biweekly flights between Malta and Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport starting on July 25. And in August, ultra low-cost carrier Ryanair will launch new routes from London Stansted, Milan Bergamo, and Turin (in northwest Italy).
For American travelers, the best way to fly into the new Salerno airport for the time being is flying direct to London or Milan and hopping on a connecting flight to the Amalfi Coast.

Best of all, the fare sale includes discounts on JetBlue's highly beloved Mint cabin, which is the airline’s version of business class and includes a lie-flat bed and additional amenities. Travelers can purchase deals including one-way flights to Dublin, Ireland for as low as $299 in Main Cabin or $1,299 in Mint. Those looking to explore the United Kingdom can fly to London-Gatwick Airport for $379 in Main Cabin or $1,299 in Mint. The airline is also offering discounted one-way fares to Paris for $379 in Main Cabin or $1,299 in Mint. The fare sale ends on July 20, 2024 at 11:59 PM, EST, for travel from July 28 through September 30. The airline advises that some days may not be available due to capacity or restricted travel dates. As a price comparison, during a non-sale period, a one-way JFK to LGW flight can cost as much as $1,138 in Main Cabin or $2,233 in Mint, based on pricing from JetBlue's website. While the Mint cabin provides tons of amenities, passengers in the Main Cabin are treated with extra legroom, and a 10" TV that has a variety of power ports including USB-A, USB-C, and AC (standard outlet). Passengers in the Main Cabin also get a complimentary blanket, and a curated menu from New York's Dig restaurant chain. JetBlue has been on the move with enhancements to help passengers during a busy summer travel season. The airline recently updated its baggage policy for basic economy, by allowing passengers to bring a free carry-on. The airline also introduced new service to Dublin and Edinburgh.
