Following the success of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and The World’s 50 Best Bars, 50 Best has just announced The World’s 50 Best Hotels in 2023, marking the brand’s first global launch since 2009.
Passalacquain Moltrasio, Lake Como, Italy has been named The World’s Best Hotel 2023. The stunning, lakeside boutique hotel has only been opened for a year. Located in an eighteenth-century villa, with spectacular terraced gardens running down to the water, the De Santis family has created a gorgeous 24-room property with the feel of a private home.
Tim Brooke-Webb, Managing Director for The World’s 50 Best Hotels, says: “Huge congratulations to Passalacqua for the achievement of making it to No.1, just two years after opening.”
Nearly half of the 50 winning properties are based in Europe. London solidifies its reputation as a global travel hub, with four hotels on the list: Claridge’s (No.16), The Connaught (No.22), NoMad London (No.46) and The Savoy (No.47), while two other UK properties were also winners: Gleneagles in Scotland (No.32) and The Newt in Bruton, Somerset (No.37), which was awarded the Carlo Alberto Best Boutique Hotel Award. This award is given to the hotel that places highest on the list that fits all the criteria of a boutique property. 50 Best defines a boutique hotel as having fewer than 50 rooms and not being part of a large chain or group, with personalised service and features unique to its destination.
Asia is home to eighteen of The World’s 50 Best Hotels including, in the No.2 spot, the towering Rosewood Hong Kong, set in the city’s Victoria Dockside arts and design district with stunning views over the harbor. The 413 room hotel has eleven restaurants and lounges plus impressive recreational facilities including Asaya spa, a fitness centre and swimming pool.
Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River is No.3, The Upper House in Hong Kong (No.4) and Aman Tokyo (No.5). Placed highest on the list and within 20 metres of a beach, Soneva Fushi (No.7), in the Maldives, is also named the Lost Explorer Best Beach Hotel.
The Aman in New York City at No. 25 is the top North American hotel on the list. Rising from the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, the Crown Building was built in 1921. One of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture ever built in the US, this was the first home of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1929. The building became Aman New York in August 2022. The luxury hotel features suites with fireplaces, two fine dining restaurants, a spa and a swanky basement jazz club.

My first experience sleeping in a cave hotel was many years ago in Santorini, in one of those typical whitewashed hotels dug into the volcanic rock. Once used as inexpensive dwellings, the island's volcanic terrain allowed the inhabitants to carve rooms into the earth without foundations, with vaulted ceilings and narrow entries enforced with limestone. They were also warm in the winter and cool in the summer and provided high resistance to earthquakes.
In the culinary world, the Michelin Guide stands as an unparalleled authority, capable of making or breaking chefs and establishments. Beyond the public gaze, within the hallowed confines of kitchens, dedicated brigades pour countless hours into their craft, their aspirations and ambitions tethered to the shimmering stars that the guide bestows - an emblem of culinary prestige that elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary.
If you've traveled at all in the past year or so, you've likely noticed a fascinating collective energy moving through airports, on board trains, and across the ocean: excited, antsy, even a little bit frenzied. The anxious rebound from the travel restrictions of the pandemic were obvious everywhere you looked. Social media feeds were bursting with photographs of everyone in some faraway destination (most often Positano or Lake Como). In nearly every major publication, there were trend pieces about “revenge travel.” Even last year’s aviation fiascos like the meltdowns at Southwest Airlines and Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport served to underscore the point: Everyone is traveling again.
From a spectacular lakeside retreat in Austria to a legendary train adventure through Italy, there is a wide selection of luxury hotels opening around the world. I have curated a list of all new properties opening in 2024 by individual hotel brands so travelers can visit their trusted favorites.

Where we live shapes most every aspect of our lives. Many of us simply grew where we were planted. That is to say, home was where your parents made it, and likely their parents before them. But as travel options expanded and opportunity-rich destinations beckoned, many young people flocked to cities in search of their fortunes. It’s a trend that continues today.
