On a recent visit to Hong Kong, I visited The Pier, a Cathay Pacific first-class lounge, before my flight to New York.

The neglect I had shown to my native Wales over the years, while writing about the streets of Delhi, or small town life in Kansas, shamefully hit home recently while listening to music in my apartment in Hong Kong, where I have been living for much of the past 20 years. The voice of the great British singer-songwriter Ian McNabb rang out loudly: “I never saw my hometown ’til I went around the world.”

The Peninsula Hong Kong may have earned the moniker the ‘Grande Dame of the Far East, but the years have been kind to this distinguished lady. With a fleet of Rolls-Royce Phantoms, its own helipad, and one of the most opulent penthouse suites in existence, you would be hard-pushed to find a swankier stay.

If you've ever taken a westbound flight, you may have noticed the flight time was shorter coming home than on the way there. For example, a direct flight from New York to Los Angeles takes about six hours and four minutes. However, you shave about an hour off the flight time on the return flight, which clocks in at just five hours and eight minutes.

With travelers increasingly seeking wellness when they travel, the journey itself presents an opportunity to start a vacation on the right foot. Airlines are meeting the demand with wellness-minded innovations that elevate the flying experience, even for the economy flyer. Cathay Pacific is one such airline leading the charge with several new offerings that include plant-based dining, shower suites and personalized massage treatments.

The global post-lockdown travel boom has continued year after year with no slowdown in sight, but even by these standards Thailand’s capital is ultra-popular. Bangkok has never been hotter, and last year made travel industry headlines when a Mastercard report named it the most visited city in the world for 2023. This is a distinction a few places claim, and the numbers often conflict, but there’s no doubt that Bangkok is near the top of all cities on earth in popularity, is getting more U.S. travelers than ever, and is both a destination in its own right, the gateway to the rest of Thailand, and a major gateway to the entire Pacific Rim. When I visited the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel before the pandemic, I loved it. But when I returned at the end of 2023, it was even better.

Thanks in large part to the 2022 World Cup, Qatar’s capital city continues to rise higher in the collective imagination of global travelers and in the sky itself, with the opening of new luxury hotel towers. My mom and I recently went on a 10-day trip to Asia, and our first stop was the newly renovated Regent Hong Kong.
