National park vacations continue to be extremely popular, especially during the summer travel season.
Around the country, parklands welcome travelers seeking wide-open spaces and a change of scenery, whether they want to immerse themselves in the mountains, forests, canyons, coastlines or deserts.
However, the national parks' surge in popularity has made spur-of-the-moment trips a bit more difficult. To ensure that visitors get the best experience possible, many of the country's most popular parks now require guests to make advance reservations for their favorite park or trail. Even at parks where reservations aren't strictly required, it's still good to make one to avoid long waits for entry.
Rules around requirements continue to change, and campsites often fill up quickly. So, before you book that hotel or vacation rental near a national park, check the website of the park you plan to visit to keep up to date on current rules and conditions.
The following nine national parks require reservations — here's everything you need to know.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, advance reservations at national parks were introduced as a way to mitigate overcrowding and encourage social distancing. However, the popularity of national parks only continues to skyrocket, so reservation systems may be here to stay.
Yosemite National Park is California's most visited national park, and is currently experimenting with a "Peak Hours Plus" reservation system to help mitigate overcrowding. You will need a reservation to enter Yosemite National Park on the following dates:
However, keep in mind that you do not need any additional reservations if you have already reserved a campsite or any other type of accommodation within the park. Those with wilderness permits (such as for backpacking, overnight climbing or other wilderness stays) or Half Dome hiking permits are also exempt from the peak-hours reservation rule.
Through Sept. 8, Glacier National Park in Montana will require vehicle reservations for visitors to access major roadways and popular parts of the park during peak travel dates, including:
In order to enter Glacier National Park at all, every visitor coming to the park by car, motorcycle or other motorized method of transportation will need a vehicle or service reservation and will also need to pay the entrance fee (or have a valid park pass on them). However, if you enter before 6 a.m. or after 3 p.m., you can enter the park without a reservation.
Thanks to the more than 2,000 sandstone formations found within its boundaries, Utah's Arches National Park is an ever-popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The park has a timed-entry ticketing system in place through Oct. 31. You can expect to pay one

The best part of summer cruising is that there are more cruising options than in any other season. Cruises to destinations like Alaska and Scandinavia are highly seasonal; go in the summer, or you can't cruise there at all. Even the Mediterranean is somewhat seasonal, with most cruise lines leaning heavily into summer and moving ships to warmer destinations during the cooler months.
Semi-private jet carrier JSX is adding a pair of new flights to Florida this fall just in time for cooler weather.
A popular road at Montana's Glacier National Park has fully reopened, allowing travelers to once again explore by car.
There’s a reason Mark Twain is still incorrectly quoted as saying “the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” While other parts of the country are sweltering, average summertime highs in San Francisco range from 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, making the City by the Bay a refreshing escape from the heat. Those looking to cool down can explore the city’s iconic sites, scenic nature, walkable neighborhoods, exciting culinary scene, and vibrant arts and culture while taking advantage of summer promotions, night markets, festivals and new activities.
American Cruise Lines’ fall foliage cruises on the Hudson River are so popular they typically sell out a year in advance.
The homemade videos came through in quick succession on the camp WhatsApp channel. Seven tiny sailboats with children manning them dotted crystal blue Mediterranean waters. The children were in pairs, seemingly matched according to age. Then there was my little one, the 5-year-old, who had insisted on tagging along with her 9-year-old brother, and the camp had agreed.
After a full day’s lesson in monoskiing, stiff, slightly bruised, but euphoric nevertheless, I was pushing my wheelchair towards the Pig Pen pub, a local favorite après-ski in the heart of Utah's Park City, when my instructor Dale Hentzell stopped me in my tracks. “You see this building?” Dale said, nodding with a nostalgic head tilt towards a weather-beaten mobile trailer. It was attached clumsily to a couple of derelict sheds. “This is where the National Abilities Center (NAC) used to be based.”
Start your engines—summer has arrived, and with it, all sorts of new hotel options to explore. There’s a major renovation of a Cape Cod classic with an unbeatable beachfront location. Near Yellowstone, design-forward cabins come with their own private wood-fired hot tub. And on the banks of the Kiawah River in South Carolina, a new Auberge Resort offers some serious Lowcountry R&R just minutes from downtown Charleston, yet worlds away from the hustle and bustle. This summer’s most exciting openings aren’t merely places to rest your head—they really help you disconnect from your home life in order to savor the great outdoors. And isn’t that what summer is all about?
All California hotels must disclose surprise junk fees starting July 1 thanks to two new state laws, including one specifically targeting hotel resorts and cleaning fees.
It is not too late to fly to Europe in business class this summer at a reasonable price.
