Listening to Idina Menzel sing is pure joy anywhere. Listening to her sing in the intimate La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego will give you goosebumps and bring you to tears. The Tony Award winning superstar is making her debut there in Redwood, a must-see world-premiere musical whose next stop, in the tradition of 36 other La Jolla Playhouse productions, including Jersey Boys, Come From Away and The Outsiders, has to be Broadway.
In Redwood, Menzel plays Jesse, a type-A businesswoman who has thrown herself into her work to avoid dealing with a devastating loss. She has pulled away from Mel (De’Adre Aziza), her wife of 20 years, who is working hard to heal herself, and is desperate to find a place where she can breathe again.
Despite Mel’s protests, she gets in the car with no destination in mind and keeps driving until she ends up in the aptly named Eureka, California, where the glorious redwoods welcome her and she feels a sense of peace. She meets professor Finn (Michael Park) and scientist Becca (Nkeki Obi-Melekwe), who are studying and caring for the trees and she convinces them to let her stay. I don’t want to say more about the plot because the theatrical experience is more powerful if you can let your journey unfold along with Jesse’s.
The score is perfection and both the Tony Award nominated Aziza and Obi-Melekwe (who played Tina Turner on Broadway, after all!) hold their own when singing with Menzel. When she first appears on stage, it actually takes the audience a minute to recognize her because she already emits such a rawness and vulnerability, she could be anyone. She embodies Jesse’s grief and humanity so deeply, you’re reminded that Menzel is as iconic an actor as she is a singer. Her performance is multi-faceted and honest and it’s impossible not to root for Jesse.
But standing as tall as Menzel metaphorically and way taller literally is the other star of the show: the magnificent redwood tree itself, which stands proudly center stage, reaching high into the theater’s eaves. The brilliantly conceived stage design is breathtaking, using projections (think Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience), animation and sound to make you feel like you’re in the middle of a lush, green redwood forest. The combination of this setting and Menzel’s voice is so emotional and moving, I often and unexpectedly felt like crying.
The show has much to say about the symbiotic connection between human beings and nature, and I expect Northern California to become a hot travel destination. Menzel actually had to learn to climb for this show – talk about defying gravity! – and it is fascinating to watch her character absorb the strength and resiliency of the ancient redwood in an attempt to heal. Her grief is

Booking.com reports more than two thirds of travelers feel the ability to share inhibitions and embrace new aspects of their personalities while on vacation makes them the best version of themselves.
