Next year, Italy will introduce a flurry of new train routes, especially for tourists.
Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS), the Italian state railway company, will launch a series of itineraries to help visitors discover the country’s lesser-trod attractions.
The train journeys themselves are also intended as an integral part of the experience and some routes will be serviced by vintage locomotives.
Here’s what you need to know about Italy’s new rail services.
Italy’s state-run rail operator has announced new FS Treni Turistici Italiani (Italian Tourist Trains) will begin running in 2024.
The project is divided into diverse categories of trains and routes.
‘Lusso’ or luxury trains will be fronted by the ultra-luxury Orient Express Dolce Vita train, whose launch has been postponed from this year to next.
Also included in this group is the Venice Simplon Orient Express, with opulent carriages restored to their 1920s glamour.
The rail company is also introducing refurbished locomotives as part of the ‘espressi’ (express) and ‘treni storici’ (historic trains) categories.
Restored 1980s and 1990s carriages will feature sleeping cabins, restaurant cars and storage areas for bikes and skis.
These trains will mainly run on popular tourist routes linking major cities and favorite visitor hotspots.
They will run from Milan to the Ligurian Riviera and Tuscan coast, for example, and from Rome to the seaside town of Otranto in Puglia and the ancient ruins of Metaponto in Basilicata.
Another category has been dubbed ‘cruise trains,’ which will provide transport for tourists looking to take short trips to popular destinations.
One proposed sleeper route will leave Rome on a Friday night and shuttle passengers up to the Dolomites for a weekend of skiing.
The train will then take travelers back to the capital on Sunday night.
Other itineraries under consideration may involve a five or six-day trip around multiple regions from Umbria to Puglia.
For a more scenic route, the ‘omnibus regionali’ will offer lower-priced, slower journeys on regional trains.
The itineraries will be specially selected to include attractive landscapes and stops at places of gastronomic interest.

A Unesco site in its entirety, Cilento is a vast and varied area in the southernmost part of Campania, Italy. Often overshadowed by its showy neighbors, Naples and the Amalfi Coast, the underrated Cilento enjoys more relaxed rhythms.

“I am the guardian of the glacier,” says Andrea Carretta. He does not mean this as a boast but rather a simple acknowledgment of service. The 46-year-old park ranger slowly lowers himself until he is on one knee. In quiet tones he asks the glacier for permission to lead us onto the secluded ice.
The sound of clinking wine glasses floated through the evening air recently as throngs of patrons sipped chilled rosé and nibbled on cheese plates in front of the cafes, restaurants and épiceries bordering Place d’Aligre in the Bastille district of Paris.

Despite the heat and the crowds in Europe this summer, American Airlines is betting on continued demand for flights across the pond next year. The carrier announced a major expansion Thursday to its summer 2024 roster that will add three new destinations to its Europe lineup, one new route, and the resurrection of several flights it hasn’t operated since before the pandemic.

This past may in Malta, under a domed tent beside the Valletta harbor, I watched as Harry Connick Jr., bathed in the soft glow of chandeliers, crooned “It Had to Be You.” I'd come, alongside hundreds of other guests, to witness the christening of Oceania Cruises' Vista cruise ship, the company's first new offering in more than a decade, which became official when TV personality Giada de Laurentiis, the godmother, pulled a lever that initiated the requisite whack of a bottle of Champagne against Vista's hull. Like most baptisms, this was a multigenerational affair. “Family is the bedrock of this organization,” declared Frank A. Del Rio, Oceania's new president. Standing beside him was his father, Frank Del Rio Sr., the outgoing Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings CEO, who founded Oceania with two small ships more than 20 years ago. “And it will continue to be how we define ourselves.”
