Fishing trips to Canada are a tradition for Jeffrey Hardy and his three friends from Vermont. They have, since 2001, been anglers loyal to Quebec’s northern wilderness, where the walleye are plentiful and the cellphone service is not.

For many of the world’s most famous mountain destinations, springtime can often be—for a lack of a better word—a dud. Snow is melting so skiing is no longer as exciting an option, but thawing mountains naturally leave a muddy trail in its wake, making activities like hiking more challenging, too. That’s why this two-ish-month springtime period is called: mud season. But not all mountain locales are made the same. Take the largest ski resort in North America: Whistler, British Columbia. In a lot of ways, unless you’re just begging for as much snow as possible to accommodate non-stop skiing, spring is a great time to be in this hilly hamlet tucked away in western Canada’s Coast Mountain range.

Stretching across six time zones and covering a land mass six times the size of Mexico, Canada defies easy categorization.

Sit on a bench in Stanley Park long enough and you’ll hear a symphony of languages spoken. Stroll down the streets of Gastown and be ready to encounter a fusion of cuisines from dozens of cultures. As a born-and-raised Canadian, I’m often surprised by how little people know about my country.

The Mount Hood stratovolcano, around two hour’s drive east of Portland, Oregon, is the most transfixing ski destination you’re ever likely to lay eyes on. It’s a perfect snow-topped pyramid, pushing high through the clouds, with a belt of fir trees and pistes that crisscross the forest like strands of a spider’s web. Get closer and you’ll see the pattern is the result of several exciting ski areas: Timberline, Mount Hood Skibowl, Mount Hood Meadows, Summit Ski Area and Cooper Spur. For those who love winter sports, this region always offers another reason to stay longer.
