The perfect six-day itinerary for Puglia, Italy

Puglia, the heel of the great Italian boot, packs in just about everything we love about Italy: olive groves and vineyards, picturesque hill towns, extraordinary art and architecture, superb food and wine. But it all comes with a Puglian twist and a host of unexpected influences. This region was, after all, once the stomping ground of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Angevins and Spaniards, whose legacy is still keenly felt in the architecture of its churches and towns. Add to that 800km of beaches fringing Italy’s easternmost coastline, and you have a region that is forever upending expectations.

The Kids Are Old Enough to Travel

It's time to end the phrase "the kids are finally old enough to travel."Parents frequently wonder what the best age is to take their kids on vacation, when are they going to remember everything or are they too young or old for a big trip. My advice: Take them everywhere. Don't let kids hold you back from spending a month in Europe or backpacking through Southeast Asia or road tripping across the U.S. Unless there is a specific age restriction, there's no reason to leave the kids at home. I learned this the hard way. On our first Christmas markets river cruise, we left the kids at home. We didn't think that river cruising would be a good fit for them. Boy did we regret it. Everytime we left the ship to go to a market, we were reminded how much they would have loved seeing the shops, Santa, the merry-go-round, the ice rink or the Ferris wheel, and there were tons of children onboard, too.

Right to Rome: why spring is the best time to visit the Italian capital

Forget Paris in spring: Rome is both warmer and cooler in the first few months of the year. The locals are in their winter black rollneck jumpers, accessorised with equally noir-ish sunglasses. With an average of 17C by March, it’s warm enough to sit outside cafés and bars, but not hot enough to fall foul of the “no shorts” rule enforced in Rome’s oldest churches.

Rail route of the month: a dramatic ‘back door’ into Switzerland through the Italian Alps

Frequent Eurocity trains dash north from Milan via the Simplon Tunnel to Switzerland. On the way to the tunnel, those express trains speed by Lake Maggiore, affording fine views of the Borromean Islands. For Switzerland-bound trains, the last station stop in Italy is at the small Piedmont town of Domodossola. The station here is remarkably grand, as befits what was once an important gateway into Italy, with all the paraphernalia of customs and immigration. From Domodossola, it is just another half-hour through the Simplon Tunnel to Brig, an appealing Swiss town that guards the northern end of the Alpine tunnel, before trains head on to Berne, Basel and the north.
