If you talk to folks from other countries around the world and ask them what they know and love about the United States, outside of our National Parks (“America’s Best Idea”) and grand cities, they might light up and mention Route 66, one of the most famous historic roads in America. Established in 1926, this route passed through parts of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California for a total of 2,448 miles.

The Midwestern United States is often referred to as the “Heartland” of America. Missouri and Michigan – and its largest city, Detroit – are defined in large part by their waterways. Michigan makes up part of the Great Lakes region, while the Missouri River gave the eponymous state its name. All that means plenty of outdoor pursuits – from swimming to hiking and kayaking – which seem made for social distancing. A new Americana-themed amusement park and resort complex — with amenities comparable to Disney World — is coming to Oklahoma.

Amid a surge of new passport applications, the United States Department of State is taking a summer road trip of sorts across America to help travelers complete their application process.  The “Special Passport Acceptance Fairs” will be held at public libraries, recreation centers, and local city administrative offices. A majority of the events are in California and New Jersey, but several others are taking place in Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Texas, and Wisconsin. New events are added weekly, and the full schedule is available in the U.S. Department of State’s website.
