Many of South America's top sights are best experienced on a cruise ship. You can take in the lush scenery as you sail down the remote Amazon River, marvel at Chile's breathtaking fjords from the sea and come face to face with rare indigenous species in the Galapagos Islands.

In the bohemian district of Almagro in Buenos Aires, the wistful notes of the tango classic “Vida Mía” drift out a window of a small cultural center. Inside, on a makeshift dance floor, couples move carefully, studying their steps as they dance in the arms of another. All the pairs are same-sex or nongender-identifying: from slickly dressed silver-haired pensioners to artistic university students clothed entirely in black. Some dance with friends, others with lovers. Each individual in a couple takes turns leading the dance as music floats over the scene, its lyrics telling a story about love and loneliness, breathing and embracing.

As for Uruguay's glitzy Punta del Este beach resort town, a cluster of wineries are making crunchy ocean-influenced whites that pair perfectly with local catches of the day. Given the vast size of South America, explore this unsung terroir by car—it'll allow you to move slowly, and get even further off the well-trod path (good news: many of the area's wineries have stylish stays right on site).
