Best beaches in Uruguay

Squeezed between Argentina and Brazil and shaped a bit like a football, Uruguay doesn’t feature on your average South American checklist. But with its progressive politics, sizzling asado culture and some of the best beaches on the continent, we think it should. Keep that in mind as you check out our list of the best beaches in Uruguay.

I've traveled to 90 countries. I only found one place I want to live.

At 25, after bouncing between California and New York, I left the US with no regrets and no plans to return. I traveled around the world, living in cities across Spain, Italy, India, Vietnam, Uruguay, and Mexico — and visited 90 countries. Eventually I realized that Chiang Mai, Thailand, was the only place I wanted to live.

Uruguay's Punta del Este Has Quietly Become South America's Most Exciting Wine Destination

Although it has been cultivating wine for 150 years, Uruguay has long been overshadowed by its vino-producing neighbors Argentina and Chile. Now, in a country best known among oenophiles for its signature Tannat red, a scene is growing near the beaches of Punta del Este and José Ignacio around highly regarded whites and rosés.

7 Best Wine Destinations in South America

Unlike coffee plantations, wine cultivation isn’t restricted by elevation or latitude, and in South America, you’re sure to stumble across vintages being made in well-known destinations such as Mendoza’s Uco Valley or Chile’s Maipó Valley. But there are a host of unexpected, up-and-coming regions across the continent, where you can sample vintages often paired with epic scenery, away from the crowds, yet surrounded by warm hospitality. Take Argentina’s extremely elevated La Quebrada de Humahuaca canyon, where light red Criolla and herbal, blackcurrant Malbec are produced at 8,200 feet above sea level. Peru’s Ica Valley, meanwhile, is usually known for Pisco production but now is the time to try the eight aromatic grape varieties as wine, rather than a spirit. As for Uruguay's glitzy Punta del Este beach resort town, a cluster of wineries are making crunchy ocean-influenced whites that pair perfectly with local catches of the day. Given the vast size of South America, explore this unsung terroir by car—it'll allow you to move slowly, and get even further off the well-trod path (good news: many of the area's wineries have stylish stays right on site).

My Favorite Airbnb Experience: A Walking Tour Through Hasidic Brooklyn

A scroll through what’s on offer in New York City under Airbnb’s “Experiences” tab reveals little of value in the way of adrenaline or anthropological knowledge—the two reasons to experience anything, in my opinion. If you want to pose for some digital photography, you can do so beneath the Brooklyn Bridge on Dumbo’s cobblestoned streets or sprawled alluringly across a Central Park lawn. You can book a crawl through Manhattan’s “secret bars” and speakeasies (drinks not included). Having seen my colleagues sail the Adriatic and traverse Rio’s rainforests by bike for this series, I wanted to find something in our own city—the best city, if you hadn’t heard—that was at least as interesting, if not as exhilarating. Only one listing caught my eye—a walking tour of Hasidic Brooklyn.

How to Pack for Long-Term Travel

Picture this: You’re wandering around a 2,000 year-old European city in the morning, sipping coffee and eating pastries. By night, you’re responding to emails and getting your work done. A few months later, you’re spending your day at a cafe in Buenos Aires and spending your nights connecting with other remote workers who happen to be in the same city as you. Lucky for me, this has been my life for the past two and a half years. I’m a full-time digital nomad who has learned a lifetime's worth of travel lessons in the past few years—especially when it comes to packing.
