The Indian hospitality industry witnessed investments to the tune of $401 million in 2023, real estate company JLL revealed in a new report. This was nearly four times the transaction volume recorded in 2022. 

Air India’s ongoing transformation is one of the most closely watched developments in the aviation world – and rightfully so. The recently privatized airline, which serves a country of 1.4 billion people, is playing catch-up with its international peers. 

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson is undertaking a massive project: completely overhauling India’s newly privatized 92-year-old flag carrier after decades of underinvestment by the Indian government. The average age of an Air India employee was 54 years old. The airline had such a dated email system that its employees started using Gmail.

Indians have budgeted more for travel in 2024, according to Skyscanner Horizons 2023-2024 report. According to Skyscanner, 63% of Indians are planning to spend more on travel this year, the highest of any country. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is number 2, with 56% of travelers planning to spend more. 

At the inaugural Skift India Summit held at The Leela Ambience Gurugram on Wednesday, hospitality chain Oyo’s CEO Ritesh Agarwal addressed the speculation around its potential IPO. He said that the company does not have a need to raise money at this stage from the public or private markets. Oyo is currently focusing on delivering good earnings results, he said. 

There’s a big demand from Indian tourists to visit the U.S., but there’s not as much demand the other way around.

Air India has big ambitions: CEO Campbell Wilson said he wants to restore the carrier into a “top-tier and world-class airline” at the Skift India Summit in New Delhi on Wednesday. 

The annual passenger capacity at Indian airports is set to increase by 60 million. This comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated new terminal buildings at 12 airports across the country.

India is set to get multiple tourism projects worth INR 14 billion ($169 million). Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating these projects on Thursday during his visit to Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Online travel agency MakeMyTrip has announced a collaboration with the Government of Goa that will promote the coastal state as a year-round travel destination with more than just iconic beaches. The state has launched measures that would highlight Goa’s inland destinations.

IPO-boundhospitality and travel technology company Oyo has announced that it would open around 400 properties in popular spiritual destinations by year end.

The Indian aviation watchdog, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), said Monday that it issued a decade-high of 1,622 commercial pilot licenses in 2023, up from 1,165 licenses in 2022.
