JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines announced plans to appeal the decision by a United States federal judge to block a potential merger between the two carriers based on violations of antitrust laws.

The new president of Japan Airlines is the first woman to helm the top job at the company, the airline announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to sue to block the proposed merger of JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines, Politico reported late Friday.

His tone was measured, but Judge Leo T. Sorokin made it clear he wasn’t buying the argument from American and JetBlue that their “Northeast Alliance” promoted competition and was good for flyers.

“We let our crewmembers and our customers down in April, and we must perform better,” said Joanna Geraghty, president and chief operating officer, JetBlue, in a statement released on April 26.
