The Eternal City is well known for its historic sites as well as its eternal traffic jams, as many of Rome’s citizens and tourists get around by individual motorized vehicles. But a new initiative to boost cycling, walking, and public transport and how they all interconnect, hopes to change that.
The new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is expected to help the city adopt healthier, more efficient and more climate-friendly transport.
The news was announced recently by the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF), a Brussels-based nonprofit umbrella group.
Rome’s motorization rate is higher than the European Union average; public transport and walking are well below the average, and cycling is even lower, according to a recent quality of life survey of 83 major European cities by the European Commission. Only 5% of respondents in Rome said they used cycling in central areas as one of their main modes of transport during a typical day, compared to a European average of 14%, the survey noted.
Like other European cities, Rome shares the commitment “to change the habits, customs and culture of our cities regarding mobility,” Eugenio Patanè, Rome’s Deputy Mayor for Mobility, said in a statement, to reduce reliance on cars and increase accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and users of public transport.
Key initiatives of the project include:
Rome also recently approved the “Great Bicycle Ring Road” (Grande raccordo anulare delle biciclette, “Grab”) a circular route of about 50 km (about 31 miles) for cyclists and pedestrians that will connect landmarks with the city's green spaces, parks and historic villas. The “Grab” will connect cycling and public transport with at least four metro lines, five tram lines, and one urban and five suburban railway lines.
“These policies will benefit road safety and air quality,” the European Cyclists' Federation noted, and will help “create a more liveable urban environment.”

ARoman holiday is glamorous enough—but wouldn’t taking a spin in a luxury supercar make the Eternal City even more memorable? At Palazzo Manfredi, a luxury hotel located in a 17th century home that’s steps from the Colosseum, guests can book the Lamborghini Experience and tool around Rome in a Huracán EVO. Think of it as the coolest way to make your time go faster.
Travelers to Europe who get behind the wheel may soon be more accountable when they engage in risky driving. The European Union has made a major move to crackdown on foreign drivers who do not follow the rules of the road.
I absolutely love Italy, for many different reasons. But I hate the way in which many Americans go about planning trips there. Survey after survey shows it is the number one dream destination for U.S. leisure travelers, but the way those travelers get their information and advice gives me nightmares.
As a travel writer, one of my greatest loves is experiencing a new country, region, or city with my son. But one place has always been our favorite: London.

The stone arches looped solemnly over their shadows, some teetering above the grass, some sinking into it. It was a dazzling January morning, and I was standing in the Park of the Aqueducts, about 20 minutes by metro from central Rome. Here, the ruined arcades of six of the 11 aqueducts that once supplied the Eternal City with an astonishing volume of water — by some counts double the per capita water allotment of a typical 21st-century American city — have been preserved.
