Rome may be famed for its ancient ruins and Renaissance art, but it is also Europe’s greenest capital, home to the more green space than any other European city.

It’s a common complaint that Rome’s churches are overwhelming: There are too many, they look too much alike, their gilt and marble often speak more to the eye than the soul. During the Jubilee year of 2025, when some 30 million Catholic pilgrims are expected to flock to the Eternal City in search of spiritual forgiveness, the ecclesiastical abundance will be compounded by crowds.

To see Rome properly, you need several days, maybe even a week. Cruisers don’t have that privilege, however. Cruise lines that advertise the Eternal City on their itineraries don’t actually dock in the non-coastal Italian capital, but in Civitavecchia, a port city located 43 miles northwest of Rome. Despite the distance, and the short time allotted to cruisers in Rome (usually one day), it’s possible to see the highlights of the city in five hours or less.

When I was planning a family trip to Rome, I knew I wanted to experience the city like a local by zipping around on a Vespa.

As if Rome wasn’t already one of Europe’s — and the world’s— most popular destinations, the Vatican’s 2025 Jubilee is anticipated to push the city (and the patience of tourists) to its limit.

Tourists eager to make a wish in Rome’s Trevi Fountain are being forced to toss coins over a plastic barrier into a small makeshift pool while the attraction is being drained for maintenance.
