Last night, at a dazzling ceremony attended by the who’s who of the Spanish culinary universe, the new Michelin stars for Spain were announced.
Barcelona once again made its case as the country’s culinary epicenter as it played host to the 2024 Michelin Guide gala for Spain for the first time. This was also the first gala to be held exclusively to present the new additions from Spain, as Portugal is set to appear in its own Michelin Guide in 2024.
This year’s Spanish selection recommends a total of 1,266 restaurants, of which 271 have been awarded one, two or three coveted Michelin stars. The Spanish gastronomic scene continues to go from strength to strength, led by some of the greatest names in food, while a new generation of young chefs, many of whom cut their teeth at the country’s most prestigious fine-dining establishments, are also starting to win accolades in their own right.
In total, 31 new restaurants were awarded one Michelin star, one was upgraded from one star to two, while an additional two restaurants achieved the highest accolade of three stars. They were joined by Córdoba’s favorite culinary genius, Paco Morales, who was also awarded the maximum three Michelin stars for his exquisite Noor.
With this, Spain has achieved a historical zenith as it now boasts an impressive 15 restaurants with three Michelin stars. Of these, four are in Barcelona, three are in San Sebastián, one is in Madrid, and the rest are spread across the country.
Fifteen three-star Michelin establishments in one country is no mean feat. Seen in comparison with other powerhouse culinary nations (like the U.S. and Italy, each currently with 13 three-star Michelin establishments, or the UK with eight), this number reinforces Spain’s position as a gastronomic force to be reckoned with.
"Year after year, Spain continues to impress our inspectors. Here, chefs and their teams are forging not only one of the most unique gastronomic scenes, but one that inspires the world. The level of creativity and personality displayed in often pioneering restaurants is matched only by the deepest respect for ancestral culinary traditions, proudly defended in territories that together constitute a veritable gastronomic mosaic," commented Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides.
In other news, the Riojan restaurant Venta Moncalvillo moved up a grade in the Michelin Guide distinctions, going from one star to two, definitively placing the
