United Airlines earlier this year put together an investment of $100 million dedicated to startups working on renewable aviation fuels. Only five months later, that fund doubled to $200 million and had investments from three other other airlines.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to pass its version of a crucial bill to reauthorize funding for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for five more years. Next, the Senate needs to finalize its own version, and the two sides need to work out differences by September 30. Miss the deadline, and Congress would need to approve an extension.

Tropical Storm Hilary drenched California over the weekend, dumping more than half a year’s worth of rain in some areas and snarling travel up and down the West Coast. 

Hurricane Hilary is now a Category 1 hurricane currently on track to hit Southern California on Sunday. Hilary is expected to hit California as a tropical storm and could cause flooding and other damage in much of the Southwestern United States. If that happens, it will be the first tropical storm to hit California since 1939.

The storm, once known as Hurricane Hilary, weakened to a post-tropical cyclone this morning, but it is currently making quite a mess of Nevada and Southern California. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California.
