In the not-too-distant past, sustainability was likely a blip on most air travelers’ radar screen. But fast-forward to today, and for many, it’s a major consideration when booking flights — one that’s driving new initiatives undertaken by airlines and travel advisors alike.

If you’re flying to or from destinations like the European Union (E.U.) or Canada and your flight gets delayed or canceled, you’re covered under strict passenger rights rules entitling you to financial compensation. In the United States, passengers don’t currently have the same legal protections, but the Department of Transportation (DOT) is hoping to change that. 

If you haven’t already booked your flights for your summer vacation, better do it now before everything sells out.

Breeze Airways will add nearly a dozen new routes from Florida this fall, and is celebrating with one-way flights starting at just $39. 

Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is putting summer and fall flights on sale with one-way fares starting at just $55 to dozens of destinations around the country.

One hack that has been rising in popularity is booking hidden city fares, also known as skiplagging, because of the tremendous savings it can yield.

United Airlines will become the first United States carrier to fly direct to Manila in the Philippines from the continental U.S. when the carrier launches flights there in October.

Spirit Airlines is helping passengers plan a late summer or fall vacation with a sale that has one-way flights starting at just $50. 

The Motor City is on the move with new flight routes.  Turkish Airlines has begun selling tickets for new service between Detroit, Michigan and Istanbul, Turkey. The flight will be the only nonstop service connecting the two cities, and offer passengers the option to connect in Istanbul to over 100 different countries and destinations. Turkish Airlines says they fly to more countries than any other airline.   The airline will operate the service to Istanbul from Detroit three days a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. 

American Airlines is taking off to a new warm weather destination and offering more seats from its hub in Miami, Florida.Announced Thursday, American will operate a direct flight from Miami International Airport to Governor’s Harbour, Bahamas (GHB) for the first time. Located about 69 miles East of Nassau, the service will operate twice weekly on an Embraer E175 aircraft. Within the United States, American will also begin new daily service from Miami to Portland, Oregon and Sacramento, on Nov. 5 and Dec. 20, respectively. 

Alaska Airlines is heading to Guatemala with a brand-new route from Los Angeles to the capital of Guatemala City.

JetBlue will dissolve its partnership with American Airlines and won’t appeal a judge’s ruling ordering the carriers to do so in an effort to protect its planned purchase of Spirit Airlines.
