Pre-pandemic travel levels were overtaken in 2023, with more passengers getting screened by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers. The record for most passengers seen in a single day was broken twice this year. While only a few days are left in 2023, this record may be broken again.
The first record for most passengers screened in a single day was broken on Friday, June 30, 2023, just before the Fourth of July holiday. TSA reported a total of 2,884,683 passengers screened in one single day of travel. This was the most people ever screened by the agency. It was reported that over 12 million passengers went through airports around the country during the Friday through Tuesday Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The record was broken again on Sunday, November 26, 2023, the weekend after Thanksgiving Day. TSA reported 2,907,378 passengers screened at airports in the United States on this day. American Airlines also broke records with around 6.5 million passengers flying over the Thanksgiving holiday. Over 14.6 million travelers went through U.S. airports from Tuesday, November 21, 2023, through Sunday, November 26, 2023.
Records may be broken once again before the year’s end. One of TSA’s projected busiest days is Friday, December 29, 2023. Monday, January 01, 2024, is also expected to be busy and possibly record-breaking. More than 2.5 million travelers are expected to pass through U.S. airports on these days.
Thursday, December 21, 2023, was also expected to be a record-breaking day, but numbers reached 2,650,811, which is below the record. However, a busy day was seen on December 22, 2023, with 2,775,193 passengers visiting U.S. airports.
TSA has reported record-breaking numbers in 2023, with the most recent happening over Thanksgiving weekend. Over 2 million travelers are expected to travel in the coming days, which could see more records broken. Travelers are advised to arrive early and give themselves ample time to pass through airport security.
