The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Amtrak announced on Wednesday, August 16 that they are replacing a standard diesel-powered bus with an electric vehicle (EV) on the Amtrak Cascades route in Washington state.
Currently, daily buses on this route provide additional connectivity beyond the morning and evening train service between Seattle and Bellingham. The Cascades Thruway buses also stop in Everett and Mount Vernon and connect with trains heading to and from stations south of Seattle, including Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and Vancouver, BC.
As the first-ever EV in the Amtrak National Network, the bus — owned and operated by MTRWestern — can make the nearly 200-mile roundtrip on just one single charge. It’s an ideal trip length to maximize efficiency of the new vehicle.
“At Amtrak, we strive to give our passengers reliable, comfortable, and sustainable travel options,” said Kara Oldhouser, Amtrak Sustainability Director, in a news release. “By incorporating environmental considerations into our current operations and as we work with our partners to reach more of America, we continue to make Amtrak an even ‘greener’ mode of transportation.”
The new EV connector will save approximately 10,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year, cutting CO2 emissions by 109 tons annually. The charging hub, installed at MTRWestern’s Seattle facilities, sits on land once used to store large petroleum tanks.
“WSDOT is pleased to be the first in the country to offer electric bus service on an intercity route that’s part of Amtrak’s National Network,” said Roger Millar, Washington Secretary of Transportation. “Amtrak Cascades trains already operate with locomotives that meet the EPA’s highest standards – reducing emissions by 86% after replacing older locomotives in 2017. Adding a bus to our fleet that is powered by clean energy further affirms our commitment to offer environmentally friendly travel options in the Pacific Northwest.”
Introducing the first-ever EV bus into the daily Thruway schedule helps Amtrak advance its pledge to become net zero by 2045. More EV buses may be on their way to you soon: The company is examining other routes within the National Network for EVs and alternative fuels.

The South Carolina Aquarium, commonly referred to as the Charleston Aquarium because of its location, has the deepest aquarium in North America: the Great Ocean Tank. In this 385,000-gallon tank that is so tall it stretches from the first to the third floor, you’ll see sharks, a 220-pound loggerhead sea turtle, and many more fish, each more intriguing and beautiful than the next. But the aquarium is home to all sorts of animals beyond fish: a rehabilitated bald eagle named Liberty, a large pink spoonbill named Pearl, and adorable river otters. Need another reason for visiting? The aquarium hosts adult-only night visits where you can wonder the galleries with a canapé on one hand and glass of wine in the other.
When I lived in Washington, D.C., from 1998 to 2005, I didn’t pay much attention to the Old Post Office Building. The Romanesque Revival-style structure taking up over an entire Pennsylvania Avenue block certainly had a commanding presence with its imposing clock tower, which offered incredible views of the city. But mostly, it was a tourist stop.
As passenger traffic on trains finally approaches pre-coronavirus pandemic numbers, Amtrak is in the middle of a major modernization push. That's thanks, in part, to a surge of new funding from the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill signed by President Joe Biden in November of 2021.
I'd mentally kind of given up on any hope of a luxurious trip between my home in New York City and my family in Washington, DC. I stopped taking regular coach buses long ago in favor of quick plane rides.
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian made a call to action for more funding and investment in the U.S. air traffic control system after an outage Wednesday disrupted more than 11,000 flights across the country.
It’s the classic coin flip of a great beach vacation: Do you prefer to swim in the ocean or a pool? Thankfully, some resorts in Europe or Australia don’t require such a choice because they offer natural swimming pools replenished with fresh seawater. Now the first natural swimming pool has opened in the Caribbean. Wymara Resort + Villas on Grace Bay Beach in Turks and Caicos features a 3,900-square-foot-pool on Sunset Cove. The ocean pool is part of the property’s Villa Beach Club and is accessible for all villa guests and available to all resort guests for a small fee.
Israel’s Tel Aviv could be the next stop for a Michelin Guide, following a series of inaugural editions released around different corners of the world last year. After years of planning, the Israeli Tourism Minister Haim Katz announced February 1 that the ministry would be moving forward with bringing the guide to the country for the first time.
I wanted an update on BWH Hotel Group, the parent company of Best Western Hotels & Resorts. So I spoke with Larry Cuculic, president and CEO since late 2021.
