How to find hotel award availability: Use these tricks during your search

Whether malicious, incompetent or just plain inconsiderate, virtually all hotel websites make reserving an award stay harder than it needs to be. Some have hidden points calendars, while others refuse to show full award availability. Some are simply glitchy.

Will Tourists Return to the Middle East?

Travelers appear to be slowly returning to some Middle East nations despite the continuation of the Israel-Hamas conflict that all but decimated the region’s tourism since it began on Oct. 7. Travel operators said that bookings to countries including Egypt, Jordan and Oman are growing, welcome news for an area that’s dependent on tourist dollars and one that had received a record number of visitors since the height of the pandemic.

Help! We’re Booked on a Nile Cruise But Worry About Our Safety.

After two pandemic-related delays, we were finally set to take a $34,309 Nile cruise with Viking, leaving Oct. 25 and including several days in Cairo and additional excursions to Jerusalem and Petra, in Jordan. But the war broke out, and the Middle East is very unstable. Viking canceled our excursion to Jerusalem, refunded that money and rebooked our flights for Oct. 29. But we don’t think Egypt or Jordan is particularly safe right now either, especially for Jews. We are older, and are heartsick at not seeing Jerusalem and terrified at the thought of being targeted as American Jewish tourists during this war. Viking still has $29,435 of our money. We only want a voucher to take the same trip in the future. Can you help?

Fried, pickled or roasted: 5 ways to cook with Jerusalem artichokes

With their beautifully earthy, nutty notes, Jerusalem artichokes remind me of salsify, but they also have a distinct hint of artichoke hearts. What I like most about them is that they can be served in a variety of ways — raw, pureed, pickled or made into crisps. In Germany, they’re even fermented to make brandy. You can also use the skins washed, roasted and ground to add a breadcrumb-like texture to dishes.

Stunning photos of a new African wonder

Legend has it that the dramatic rock-hewn churches of Lalibela were created with the help of a team of angels. Buried deep into the rock in the highlands of northern Ethiopia, the 11 monolithic churches were built in the late 12th and early 13th Centuries by King Lalibela, who, so he claimed, had built the churches on the instruction from God.
