Delta Air Lines is expanding the reach of its domestic network.

This past weekend’s Super Bowl LVIII was a star-studded event which attracted guests from around the world with as many as 1000 private jets arriving in Las Vegas. People planning to attend huge sports and social events like the Super Bowl via private plane can face a unique, high net-worth problem — no inventory left unless you’ve booked far in advance. That’s where Wheels Up’s new partnership with Delta offers its members an alternative; flying commercial in first class with additional exclusive perks. Alternatively, members who fly commercial most of the time may charter a private plane for short and medium range flights to smaller airports or for a special occasion. The partnership offers flexibility and ensures that members won’t have to miss out on popular sports and social events with several options to choose from.

JetBlue’s stock fell by nearly 50% in the past year as it reeled from the loss of its merger with Spirit Airlines and declining revenues. 

Even as more airlines have invested in expanding their network of lounges in recent years, the spaces have increasingly felt crowded, especially as more travelers gain entry through memberships, elite status, or as a benefit of their credit cards.

American Airlines has delayed its return to Israel until at least October. The carrier confirmed to Skift that operations to and from Tel Aviv will remain suspended until October 26, 2024.

On January 16, a federal court judge ruled to block JetBlue Airways’ proposed $3.8 billion purchase of Spirit Airlines on antitrust grounds. The decision was made based on a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit filed in March 2023 and aimed at stopping the deal. According to the suit, the merger would “allow JetBlue to eliminate its largest ultra-low-cost rival, further concentrate the airline industry, and harm American travelers.”

I've had quite a multiyear journey with American Airlines. I had given up on its frequent flyer program, quitting in disgust as AAdvantage upped the qualification requirements for Executive Platinum back in 2018 (to $15,000 in spending). That led me into the arms of Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines — at least until the pandemic hit. My Platinum Pro status from 2019 carried over all the way until early 2022, when I dropped back down to the dreaded "member" status.
