There's a lot to love about Mexico — the historic cities, the sizzling street tacos, the colorful festivals and the endless art. But undoubtedly, what draws most visitors to Mexico, first and foremost, are its show-stopping beaches. With nearly 6,000 miles of coastline split between the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Sea of Cortez, Mexico serves up a sandy buffet that appeals to everyone. Whether you're a sun-worshipper, a wave-chaser or a beach bum only in it for the tacos and sunsets, there's something here for you.

Whenever we get asked the question, Where should I go in Central or South America?, it’s hard to answer in a hurry. Sure, there are some common threads that tie the region together. From Belize to Chile, a fascinating blend of Indigenous, European colonizer, and more recent immigrant cultures shape everything from cuisine to architecture. There’s a vibrancy, too, an unapologetic joy in both everyday life and special celebrations, that many visitors can’t help but feel drawn to. Beyond that, however, so much of what defines the best places to visit in Central or South America is personal. What do you want out of this rich and varied swath of land?
It's been one month since the U.S. State Department updated its travel advisory for Mexico, one of the few countries broken down by states rather than an all-encompassing advisory.
The city of Madrid is filled with enough sights and activities to keep visitors entertained for weeks. There’s no question that Bolivia’s food scene is having a moment, with three restaurants (Phayawi, Ancestral, and Gustu) in Latin America’s 100 Best Restaurants—up from zero in prior years. And that may be thanks, in part, to the fact that the top restaurants in La Paz showcase standout local ingredients, including the country's bountiful wine. In the first half of 2024, Bolivian wines have already earned 40 medals in international competitions such as the Bacchus Awards (Spain), Virtus (Portugal), and the Brussels International Competition (Belgium). Producers like Jardin Oculto, for instance, have bottles prominently featured in several Michelin-starred restaurants outside Bolivia, too, including Central in Lima—one of the top restaurants in the world, according to World's 50 Best.

For our last night in La Paz, Mexico, we kept it simple: A couple of cans of cold Pacifico, a bench on the malecón, the city’s waterfront promenade, and the sunset glowing orange over the shimmering silver-blue Sea of Cortez. My husband, Alex, and I had spent nearly a week taking scenic desert drives and lazy city strolls, visiting stunning beaches and mountains, and enjoying a steady diet of fish tacos and mezcalitas. But now we were salt-coated and sinking into a blissful exhaustion that comes only after a day spent scuba diving.
We hop from a small fishing boat onto an even smaller panga, as we’re about to enter Mexico’s Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, located along the East Cape of the Baja California Peninsula between Cabo San Lucas to the south and La Paz to the north. I’m here with my two teenage daughters, and they are about go snorkeling for their first time. They are excited and a bit nervous. “Will there be sharks?” they inquire for a third or fourth time. “Definitely not,” our guide responds with a smile. Which comes across as comforting if not convincing.
It doesn’t take much of a search online to figure out what my hobbies are — after all, I’m a travel editor, and I write about the things I like to do when traveling. Usually, that involves some kind of outdoorsy activity, like mountain biking, hiking, scuba diving, wildlife watching, or something else in that vein.
Jungle-clad Maya ruins, centuries-old villages with lovely cobbled streets, white-sand beaches and world-class diving along the world’s second-largest barrier reef – Honduras has it all, in spades.
As I sipped my coffee while watching the sunrise, painted with deep hues of pink and orange, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I glanced over just in time to catch a majestic gray whale breaching in the subdued morning waves of the Pacific Ocean, leaving nothing but white foam in its wake. At that moment, as the birds chirped and neighborhood dogs played below, I felt more at peace than ever before.
