Bicycling is one of my favorite activities for intimately connecting with the land. And Prince Edward Island (PEI) makes for an ideal cycling destination, one that’s laden with a sense of serenity, with scenic treasures awaiting around many a curve in the road. Pedaling along the coast and the pastoral interior allows you to slowly soak up the best that PEI has to offer, whether it’s pristine beaches backed by red sandstone cliffs; wide swaths of sweet-smelling purple and sometimes pink lupines that bloom each June; solitary white and red lighthouses that presided over a windswept landscape; or quaint coastal villages where you’ll want to stop a while to dig into freshly caught fish and shellfish.

Nestled along the promontory overlooking the St. Lawrence River, with distinctive architecture including its iconic soaring turrets, the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac is the stuff of hotel legend. One glance at the fortresslike structure and it's easy to see why many consider it the most photographed hotel in the world.

According to a recent Virtuoso report, the appeal of culinary tourism continues to rise as travelers choose food and drink adventures as the main course for an immersive, memorable trip that connects them to their chosen destination.

Hotels and inns that have been around for decades or centuries often have the sort of charms—and scenic locations—that newer properties lack. “Historic hotels are often in tree-lined historic districts or close to nature,” says Lawrence Horwitz, a spokesperson of Historic Hotels of America, a consortium of these properties.

The late great Anthony Bourdain once said “without Montreal, Canada would be hopeless.” Of course this isn’t true as Canada has many charms but it’s fair to say that the Anglo francophone city is a sheer delight, from both a culinary and cultural perspective. This unique melting pot of cultures, set on an island in the St. Lawrence River, is the birthplace of Leonard Cohen, Mordecai Richler, Arcade Fire, Cirque du Soleil and jazz legend Oscar Peterson.
