If you're ever wondering aloud where the hottest mid-winter celebrations take place, those in-the-know might quietly respond, “St. Barts.” The island's luxe air of mystery and remoteness are part of what makes it a seasonal staple for jet setters and superyachts as they follow the sun to the Caribbean in winter. The festivities rage on until the St. Barths Bucket Regatta in mid-March, but what most visitors don’t realize is that the island is practically a year-round one, since the only time hotels typically shut is at the height of hurricane season (late summer).

Large hotel chains are always adding to their portfolios, but for those prefer an independent property (or one that’s part of a small regional group) there are plenty of charming inns and lodges opening this year. From Aspen to Athens, here are 15 new boutique hotels with distinctive character and a genuine interest in sustainability.

The Transportation Security Administration has announced an expansion of its TSA PreCheck program with the addition of Norse Atlantic Airways, Lynx Air, Starlux Airlines, and Fiji Airways.

When did your thirst for adventure begin?Adventure has been with me my whole life. I spent my earliest years on the island nation of Fiji, where my parents, who were themselves very adventurous people, were working at the time. They once recalled seeing me wandering out into the shallow ocean, lost in my own private quest. Me being a toddler, this was obviously quite alarming for them, and even when we returned to England, the only way they could stop me from putting myself in danger was to quite literally tie me to a rope. Had they not, I would have been off scrambling up some rock face.

Famous for being the private island playground of the rich and famous (some resorts secretly pride themselves on being the place billionaires go to escape the millionaires), Fiji doesn’t typically come to mind as a budget-friendly destination. Fortunately, a trip to the islands doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny.

With 333 islands making up this South Pacific dreamscape, it would take a lifetime to truly explore every corner of Fiji. For the past six years, I’ve been living in Fiji’s capital city of Suva and have made many travel mistakes and cultural snafus so you don’t have to. 

Is Fiji good for hiking? In a word, yes. From strolling along a volcanic coastline to tiptoeing around tree roots up a cloud-topped mountain, this South Pacific island nation is a hiker’s heaven. Think waterfalls flowing into natural pools, empty beaches best reached on foot, vibrant birdlife and views that stretch all the way to the horizon.
