Summer may be over, but beach season doesn’t have to be. In fact, with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, fall is the best time to explore coastal towns where cultural sites, natural wonders, and tons of history tell memorable stories to take back home. Here are seven seaside escapes that are even better offseason.

If there's one thing New York City does better than most other US destinations, it's overloading the senses.

It’s common for visitors to New York City to look at booking a hotel within Manhattan, often sticking around touristy Midtown or maybe heading to a more stylish area like SoHo or Lower East Side.

With its mild, pleasant climate, charming English Channel island Jersey, just off the coast of Normandy, is an excellent weekend break destination as it’s a very short flight from London. The landscape is varied, from rugged coastlines to pristine beaches and the history is fascinating, with castles, including Elizabeth Castle, where King Charles II hid during the English Civil War and bunkers from German-occupied Jersey in World War II. As a tax haven, it’s probably better served than similar islands of its size, with some lovely hotels, shops and good restaurants, including one with a Michelin star.

While Manhattan has seen its fair share of new neighborhoods pop up in recent years—Hudson Yards, for example—the borough is also packed full of historic districts that can be traced back to well before the 19th century, with Hell’s Kitchen being a particularly notable case. Located on the eastern banks of the Hudson River, this Jersey-adjacent neighborhood has historically been home to a high concentration of working-class Irish Americans, while a prominent LGBTQ+ community can be found in the modern era—and in addition to its many lifelong residents, the neighborhood is no stranger to luxury hotels, with the Romer Hell's Kitchen serving as the neighborhood’s newest addition.

Summer in New York City means outdoor festivals, al fresco dining, and day-long picnics in the park. But it also means mystery street smells, sidewalks so hot they could melt diamonds, and the dreaded subway car with a broken AC. Even die-hard New Yorkers need a weekend away from the mayhem, and when the weather is warm, there’s no better place to escape than the beaches near New York City.
