In Transylvania, a Hotel That Offers Beekeeping and Hay Bathing

Outside the tiny town of Simon in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, an NGO called Foundation Conservation Carpathia is creating a 66,000-acre national park. It’s against that backdrop that the hotelier Bogdan Calulanu opened Matca, a 16-room hotel with 10 private villas. is the Romanian word for “queen bee,” the name a reference to the beekeeping practiced in this honey-producing corner of Transylvania and also to the pastoral serenity of a region that’s barely changed since the Middle Ages.

How meeting Morocco's craftspeople inspired Peter Bellerby to become a globemaker

You might think it’s a given that a globemaker is well-travelled; making or painting a globe is, after all, like having a travel brochure staring you in the face all day. In my case, it’s also, apparently, in the blood. My great-grandmother was Marion Carswell Livingstone, who, according to my grandmother (with whom I’d never argue), was descended from David Livingstone. But when I travel, it’s often to see where globes are made, as much as the place they’re made in.

Every year since 2009, the World’s 50 Best Bars has released its list of top tipple temples from across the globe. Not once has a single bar from Africa ever qualified for that list.
