Beach season has finally touched down on New York, and that means plenty of trips to and from The Hamptons. Read: bumper to bumper congestion between the city and the South Fork of Long Island, with anxious drivers and passengers eager to dip their toes in The Atlantic.
If you don’t want to drive down the dreaded, traffic-packed Long Island Expressway yourself or spend a fortune on a driver (Uber is always an option...) here are a few more efficient ways to get to The Hamptons this season, via public transit and private companies.
Travel out east with ease by bus, train, helicopter and plane.
Hampton Jitney
This bus between New York City and Eastern Long Island is a popular choice for those making the trip back and forth throughout the summer. The bus has several pickup spot in Manhattan and an airport connection spot in Queens for those arriving via JFK or LaGuardia. Fares start at $41 one-way and multipack tickets are available, hamptonjitney.com
Hampton Ambassador
Known as the luxury bus to The Hamptons, The Ambassador offers reserved seats in a vehicle with a two by one layout. Coffee, tea, and cold soft drinks are offered on board, as are tastings from local Long Island wineries. The bus has pickups in various Midtown and Upper East Side locations, plus the airport connection stop, and runs from Manorville to Montauk on the South Fork. Fares start at $64, hamptonambassador.com
Long Island Railroad
The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) can be a swift and efficient way to get out east from Penn Station, Grand Central or Jamaica, Queens. This year, a season Thursday express train to the Hamptons departs from Penn Station at 4:07 p.m. each week, dubbed the Thursday Cannonball. The same train runs every Friday through Labor Day weekend making stops in every town. The downside to taking the train? Chaos. Unassigned seats, last minute track announcements and unexpected delays can make boarding the train a bit stressful. Opt for weekday routes, if possible, to avoid crowds. Fares start at $23.50, mta.info
Blade
Blade offers chartered and private seaplanes and helicopters between East and West Manhattan and several stops in The Hamptons including Southampton, Sag Harbor Bay, East Hampton and Montauk. Flights are typically under half an hour. Fares start at $920, blade.com/hamptons
Hamptons Streamliner
New for Summer 2024 is a luxury bus run by Blade in partnership with The Jet. The vehicle offers first-class style hoverseats, in-seat service with light food, drinks, pillows, cashmere blankets and hot towel service, cocktails, a spa-inspired lavatory and more. Routes start in Manhattan at 34th and 3rd and Hudson Yards to Southhampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton. Fares from $195, blade.com
